EV general discussion

No idea you're the expert and I can't debate it.
All I know was the temp has been the same for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the balance charge has given me more, not that I need it.
I know the temps because I look at my watch before I go out on my bike to see what I might have to wear.
Funnily enough on Wednesday I was covered up head to foot and freezing and the rest of the week in shorts.
Its the overnight temp that really sucks the heat out of a pack though and the balance pack has various hotel loads, pumps, current etc running which keeps the pack that few degrees warmer. All adds up.

My I-Pace lease ends in a few months and as I do a lot less miles I am going to go for a smaller used EV with a £18k - £22k budget.

I checked out the MG4, 2023 with 21000 miles and boy was it not good. It felt no more than just OK inside and perfectly acceptable but at no level did it feel “nice”, just meh. I suppose that is exactly what its aim is. To be fair I can live with that but the steering wheel/pedal offset is a big red line for me. The ELK kicked in twice in streets with lots of cars parked either side as I was forced to weave over the road markings. Also the grip wasn’t great in the wet conditions and had a couple of small wheel spins off the line without really trying. I suspect the tyres were still original and reaching EOL but I didn’t check because it has already been ruled out for the offset steering wheel. The UI was terrible and slow.

I also checked out an EX30 and the lack of drivers display and everything controlled on the screen is a big red line also. It drives me very well, far better than the MG.4 and even the RWD version had plenty of performance. It’s also outside my budget by a few grand but the lack of drivers display makes it moot.

ID.3 2022 model with 18,000 miles. Very basic inside, MG4 felt better and that’s a low bar. It drives far better and was more comfortable than the MG4 though. UI and touch sensitive steering wheel controls are poor. The utter basic level of trim you get was also disappointing, not even a reverse camera. The big factor was I can get a 2022 model with some warranty remaining for less than my budget.

Going to test a Megane E-Tech to see how it fits in the list of potential candidates.

I’ve ruled out anything that won’t give 250 Sumer and 200 winter combined driving miles.
Born ? Better interior drives better and V2 has camera and the HUD

Just to add over winter we have been seeing without fail 20 miles for every 10% battery.
So 80% would be 160, 60% was 120 and the lowest we ever run it down to 47% was around 96.
On Sunday my wife ran it to 10% and it showed 21 on the mileage, in other words zero change in warmer weather for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
It could be a coincidence but perhaps after 4 days the BMS was ready to recalculate and the balance charging did bugger all.

looks like the trick on mg4 to get effective battery balance and recover range is setting target in the smart charger IOG to greater than you want (and have asked the car to attain),
so that it it has some extra time when the charger is still providing power .... but, what does the internet know
ie. IOG has some drawbacks.

why is that a drawback? it is absolutely trivial to request a few more kwh into the app if you want to make 100% certain the car has enough time to fully top off the battery inc any balancing.

I am genuinely not seeing the issue.

(in truth its an advantage for us because if the car takes longer to charge then it may force IOG to hand out some bonus out of the usual 6h cheap period slots...... ie IF i need to fully top off my battery i usually attempt to do it on a sunday because 1) there tends to be more clean energy then which should increase the chance of bonus slots and 2) those Sunday roast dinners for 6-8 people take a lot of power so if i can get it done at 7p its a bonus!)

Yes, thats pretty obvious for anyone using IOG.

I love how you have quoted a noob question from MG forum, like dude why are you even over there?

Ive just requested 80% on my Ipace but plugged the evoque in to fill it up and chuck dishwasher on on cheap.

I was told yesterday I should have carried out instructions to the letter because at 23:30 I should have put the Octopus app on BUMP Charge.
That way there would be no breaks in the charging, Octopus would keep charging until full.
Apparently because there were breaks (stops and starts) it might not have balanced charged correctly however others disagree, as long as you don't use any battery you can have breaks.
Here you can see a couple of breaks around 01:00 and 01:30 and according to one bloke it should be continuous.
Also the the noob question you linked to doesn't mention that a balance charge should be 10% to 100% like it says in the manual.
Somebody on post #75 mentions for the first time the recommended charge from 10 to 100.

so you are saying that officially...... you are meant to charge your car to 100% once per week and it needs to be on a bump charge to make sure it is all done in 1 go? that sounds wrong to me.... and if it isnt then i wont be going near an MG EV as most other EVs are nothing like as fussy as that!.
(other than when i had a fault and was having issues charging) i have never used a bump charge as that negates the entire point of IOG which is meant to help balance the grid.

that kind of fussiness will be catnip to the anti EV lot as all it does is create anxiety and hassle where there needn't be.
