EV general discussion

Saw a BYD Seal in the flesh in a supermarket car park for the first time and was surprised that it’s a decent looking car. Can’t stand the looks of the MGs but the Seal looks to be a decent looking car inside and out.

Really? I spent a little time in the BYD showroom in MK, I really wasn’t impressed.

These Chinese cars look ok at first glance. Then when you look closer to start to see the awkward angles and lines. As well as the very cheap materials, even more so than you normally see on modern cars.

You do talk carp.
Which Chinese models is it that you've taken a closer look at?

How do you think they are making them so cheap? Cheap parts...

If they are cheap on the surface, you can guarantee they will be cheap in the places you can't see too.

I know people like to justify their purchases, but these things scream tack...

You said when you look closer, so what models have you looked closely at.
I have a Chinese ev, it's of much better quality that my previous vauxhall, rover, or vag vehicles.
So please enlighten me of your concerns.

Not hard to get a closer look, they are everywhere. Go to any estate and count them.

You say it's better quality, but you have been distracted by a fancy dashboard and toys. The materials are definitely cheapo and they will likely wear quickly. Especially the fake leather seats. Quite new ones (only 1 year old) already have visible stretching on them, imagine how it will look in 5+ years, probably will have holes.

Again, which ones are you looking at.
You keep with the broad statements but like trump there's no actual detail or substance.
Mines 4 years old and the fake leather seats are still fine.

They are all like that, pretty much all the same.

When was the last time you bought a cheap Chinese product and it last a long time? If you were buying tools or vital safety equipment, people would say don't buy Chinese because we know it's not safe. But with cars there seems to be a Tesla-like cult (though I guess thats over now the leader started LARPING as Goebbels)

Another sweeping statement, I wonder how many products you own that have Chinese parts.
Regarding cars, I've had plenty of English made cars that failed me at the worst possible time.
Does that make English made items - tat?

Some of them are yes lol. Very expensive ones. Maybe not tat, but are now quite pretentious and have no business being so expensive.

So are the Chinese cars cheap or are the western cars expensive?

The latter would explain why they are suffering at the hands of the Chinese, overpriced vs value for money.
But vfm in your eyes man cheap. Deep down you know the western cars are overpriced.

Have there been enough chinese cars sold in the uk yet to make objective analysis of quality

Dunno why you're questioning Nasher, he's a fountain of knowledge, really knows his stuff. A valuable contributor to the Motors forum.

I thought Chinese cars were cheap because of cheaper labour and government subsidies

Unsure how accurate the above link is, whilst labour costs are cheaper so is their cost of living.
A bit like why US car manufacturers make some of their cars in Mexico rather than in the US

It can be both. I’ve been in an MG4 and it feels superficially fine but look a bit closer and the paint finish is not great, or the materials are indeed less premium. But that’s exactly what an MG4 aims for given the cost new.

Where things get more complicated is in the used market when you work to a budget. A 1 year old used MG4 vs a 2 year old used Cupra Born is a very different prospect. The Born just beats it on every level for quality and materials. Yes I have tested both and the Born was just better.

Yes you can get a 2 year old MG4 etc, but now you are in a race to the bottom.
