EV general discussion

It's shocking and I feel sorry for people who may be forced in the future to either have an EV or nothing at all.
Two of my mates would love an EV but they can't even park outside their own house, even if they could they wouldn't be able to run a cable to their cars so their only choice is a public charger which is more expensive than fossil fuel.
If I can charge at 7p/Kw those forced into an EV should be able to do it at a public charger.

I don't think ice will ever go away for that reason. It will always be useful.

If you discount some public chargers like that they'll never be free. In some places they use to be free and had to bring in charges and over stay fees for that exact reason.

I think many places are focused on DC charging infrastructure at the moment. But at some point more AC chargers will start to appear.

Public charging is never going to be as cheap as domestic. The price also need to cover the cost of the hardware, installation, billing, maintenance, profit, vandalism, customer support, rent of land, standing charges, tax etc etc.

I could go on…

I don't mind the DC charging infrastructure being more expensive (although would like to see them reduce the price slightly from where it currently is). Makes topping up on a long journey so easy. It does feel like there might be a demand for AC charging hubs in certain areas but as @b0rn2sk8 has stated, there are other factors that will drive up the price.

Well that's nice.
About a month ago next door but five neighbour knocked on the door asking about my car.
I took him for a drive then on an industrial estate to let him have a go.
I also filled him in about chargers, Octopus iGo and the Jerry Pan videos and he went away looking happy.
About 15 mins ago he knocked on my door saying he'd picked up his MG4 an hour ago so I asked when his charger was being fitted and he'd already had it done a week ago.

So I did about 120 miles in a brand new BYD Seal Excellence yesterday and I have to say - any potential concerns about China to one side for a moment - it's a very impressive car.

Fit and finish seems broadly in line with something like an i4/3 Series level of car but standard spec absolutely wipes the floor with those, as I'm sure most people know! How well it will age remains to be seen, but I think most people would be impressed with the quality. There's some room for improvement on the software front but I couldn't really find any obvious problems, everything seemed to work well. Some of it is a bit poorly thought out (the fan controls for example), but I'm sure you'd get used to that over time. The seats are great, and the Dynaudio stereo could be louder but it sounded pretty good - better than the standard ID7 stereo and RWD Model 3.

It reminded me quite a bit of an Audi A5, it unsettles if you start pushing it round corners, but it's more than acceptable and in line with things like a Model 3/Polestar 2, etc. It feels nice and safe and of course there's no shortage of performance if required. Range looked promising, I can see most people being able to get 280-320 miles from it, but hard to test over a relatively short period.

Would I buy one? Hmm. It's a relatively new brand to the UK and yet to be tested really in terms of support, but I think most people would be happy with one. Certainly worth considering if you're in the market for a Polestar 2/Model 3/i4...

For a first proper go at a mass market luxury car it's a very strong effort, you do fear for their competitors!

BYD are very much an outlier in the Chinese market, they've been building stuff for Western companies for ages.

Saw my first Lucid Air last week in Holland. Couldn't believe the size of it, makes the Model S look like a Smart car.

I saw my 1st Kia EV3 in the flesh today when out and about.
I thought it looked really nice. bigger I think than I was expecting given it's the "small" Kia. it still dwarfed our i3.

would definitely consider one as our 2nd car. only snag is I really want a R5 as our 2nd car and the EV3 is too small to ever replace the ipace in the future.

(ipace is gonna be a hard car to replace, as a whole package without spending more than I am prepared to do not sure what comes next after that. hopefully that is a next decade problem as I like to keep cars I like for a good while

Sea Lion is going to be a big mid-range SUV killer if they get the UK price right on the typical finance options, not just the advertised MSRP. It reminded my of how much I liked the Genesis GV70 in terms of quality, fit and finish for a non EU/Lexus car.

vincenth has/had a gv70 - need to ask him for his multiple year review , thought it's handling was his negative.

[i-pace recently saw the pictures of the i-pace valhalla

correct me if I am wrong but were (at least a bunch of them) not the water destroyed ones from the flood last year?

and it's not like they were going to the crushers. I believe they have been stripped down and the working parts are now for sale

I saw an EV3 the other day and thought it was utterly hideous looking. Easily one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen. I wouldn’t drive one if they were free.

My I-Pace lease ends next month and to be honest, I do a lot less miles so was thinking about picking up a cheap 3 or 4 year old ID3 and not even worry about warranty.

EV regs have been watered down it seems

Fines for missing quit reduced to £12k per car (still quite a lot)

Hybrids allowed until 2035

Not sure if annual EV mandate has changed

Petrol/diesel vans allowed until 2035, which is sensible (If one can call any of this sensible).
Also some sports car manufacturers exempt until 2035.

Still not sure we'll be ready by 2035 though it is 10 years away. A lot of these changes instead of forward investing to make them a reality seem aimed at putting the pain on consumers hoping they'll kick up the stink to force changes - such a cynical dysfunctional way we increasingly seem to go about things.

Same for cars really - 2030 target is just going to make a mess of the used car market and put the pain on the most disadvantaged in society without an intensive program of investment into things like the charging network first.

Its pretty clear we are never going to make it. The charging infrastructure is still crap and unreliable, you still need to own a driveway to charge at home, public transport is still useless outside London. EVs are still far to expensive for most private buyers.

There are still loads of dirt cheap to run bangers on the road which people are using to get to work. Because you don't need anything more for the daily commute. There are no EVs to replace those.

The america tariffs is the main reason for the relaxation - thinking its anything else just shows how wide off the mark you are.

Similar story with our neighbours - wrote off their aging 1 series a few weeks ago, and she came out and had a chat with me asking about the Zoe I used to have as she was planning on getting a EV to replace it for a cheap run around for local journeys, I laughed and said if she got one, as soon as her husband had a chance to drive it, he'd want one. A week or so later she picked up a Leaf to replace the BMW... last weekend his car was gone and replaced with an MG ZS
