EV general discussion

Same thing with the leaf.

One of the things I find funny with the earlier Leafs, kind of similar with the Pulsar (the Qashqai derived version not the older one) - the higher trim levels were done as a bit of a halo project and much nicer than you'd normally get at that level and with the Leaf kind of funny because you've got an interior which would be nice for long journeys but you'd be lucky to get more than about 70 miles range out of it.

EDIT: Though consistent with a traditional automatic shifter I still think it kind of weird with the shifter in the Leaf you move it forward to reverse and backwards to drive LOL.

i mentioned the Zoe because sandys didnt seem like they were considering a new car - given the Up is no longer made.

the R5 is the new Zoe in terms of market placement i imagine.

The Up is just a car I have, actually bought for my daughter to learn in but had an incident and wrote my motor off, so it's mostly driven by me, I'm a looking at new cars, possibly through company scheme, though not tied to it, I buy my cars regardless of schemes, I am loony like that who doesn't give much thought to wasting his dough on depreciating assets :D mostly because I am not a car flipper, if it meets my needs drive until die, anyway means Zoe won't be on the list though I can appreciate it for what it is.

I've basically been driving an Italian Corsa for 14years (platform share with my Abarth Punto) so something different this time.

Most Leaf’s will do more than 70 miles. The 30kwh has been around since 2015 and the 40kwh since 2018.

I was mostly talking about the original first gens ones - the Tekna trim levels and some limited runs like the Black Edition have interior features and styling suited to mile munching but especially now you'd be lucky to get much over 70 miles range.

Was having a good laugh with a guy at work whose wife is now super upset about having an EV... but not in the way you'd think! Apparently someone had smacked into the side/rear quarter of her Pug 208 when pulling off a drive, so while it is being fixed they loaned her an e-208 for a couple of days until they could get her a petrol one or something close enough. Problem is he said, that she has realised it is so nice driving the e-208 around, much less effort, quieter and way more performant that she now doesn't want her petrol one back and wished she'd listened to him when she insisted on getting it!
She's even used the 3-pin granny they loaned her with the car to charge it from the garage mains, something which she was told that was impossible from a work colleague, who said, "you must have a special very expensive charger fitted to your house that will be stolen or not work and you'll be stranded at home". Just lol.
So now they are going to see if they can find a suitable car, in the right colour of course, once it is repaired to trade against.

Dlockers didn’t even have a Corsa so I’ve got no idea where jpaul was heading
small ev's already on second hand market that would be up/zoe alternatives ? he had the 208 incarnation then did he ?

----------------------

so according to starmer at JLR (and bringing forward the the 2035 pushback) the hybrids are making a big difference to emissions.
what is this "industrial policy' he will employ to shelter car industry from worldwide storms

Did he see/comment on the new jaguar ev prototype in the foyer ?

corsa-e on the used market ? only 4m long, so manouverable in town versus an UP/Zoe - ask dlockers.

Ask dlockers? The chap who famously deleted his account and is completely and comprehensively uncontactable? That dlockers?

Do you ever think you should let the thought soup settle for a second or two before puking it up all over our screens?

I don't understand the the question. In regards to the second, a Corsa isn't a 208, they may be on the same platform but they are not the same car. If you knew he had a 208 why didn't you say 208?

It's also irrelevant because he isn't on the forum anymore.

Dlockers left the forum awhile ago - keep up.
of course I knew that - think he's much missed in home&garden - lol, excellent diy build logs.

what starmer, evidently, didn't know about phevs . https://theicct.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/real-world-phev-use-jun22-1.pdf

Maybe she made the mistake of reading SpeakEV where the 'using a three pin to charge your car WILL burn your house down' line is rolled out by default.

It's funny. My PHEV has actually been pretty close to the quoted equivalent MPG if you ignore my "edge case" work trips. In the depths of winter I was getting 150 - 180 mpg for all my SDPC use. I'll easily be over the claimed 256 mpg now the weather has warmed up a bit. That's with a piddly 12kWh battery of which only 10 is usable.

Very much a case of YMMV.

(I say this as someone who is generally not a phantom of PHEVs unless very specific circumstances) but there are PHEVs and there are PHEVs.

if the government are set on reverse ferreting then they could easily discount the "crap" ones which can't even manage 50miles real world winter range.
also for company cars PHEVs need to drop any tax breaks all together. if you want that sweet tax dodging then it should be full EV or nowt.

our PHEV does over 90miles winter, 130miles summer range and in 12 months used under 9l of fuel (and covered around 10,000 miles)

so despite being disappointed in the recent news personally, PHEVs *could* be part of the solution but only if handled sensibly and the poor ones weeded out.
personally I would like to see all new PHEVs have a wltp 100 mile battery range (so real world winter dual carriageway range of around 60 miles) otherwise they are considered like an ICE

my brother in law has a company car PHEV (an Audi, does around 30 miles in winter on battery) and is about to get rid but is still insisting on not having an EV.... he has no reason not to, doesn't do any long distance work milage but will still get good tax breaks on a PHEV (or so I am told) and I think that could be changed

A lot of the earlier electric cars had very generous trim levels. I had a Zoe first, and that came with a bunch of toys which were extras even on the top-spec Clio. I then replaced it with a 24kWh Leaf, which was even more generously kitted out. And I'm now driving a fully kitted out 40kWh Leaf (I've even got the Intelligent Rear View Mirror).

I know the Leaf gets some stick for its archaic design, but the 40kWh car is a huge bargain at the moment IMO. They sell for about the same price as a used Astra of similar age/milage
