EV general discussion

Ah maybe I’m misunderstanding it pretty sure I read it’s going to be billed in a min of 30 min chunks. The issue with Ohme allocating small charge chunks is it generally throttles the charge speed. So you might get 20 mins but it could be at only 2.5kw or less. In bigger chunks it is generally at full speed. Ohme have said that this should be fixed but I still get quite a few smaller chunks at lower charge rates which would not be ideal when Octopus start the new billing system.

The throttling behaviour should be fixed by now, yes, so you shouldn't see sub 7kw charges deliberately (but the changes aren't until March at the earliest so maybe updated software is still rolling out)

Only charging for part of a 30 minute billing period is fine though, so I wouldn't worry about it if it's still doing this, as long as the reduced charge rates stop occurring.

I need to start thinking about the next EV for me, as worst case scenario, the ID7 is ending this year in October ish

I will probably buy one as I don’t think I’d ever lease a car again, as my experience trying to resolve any issues has been terrible.

Instead, I’ll buy one outright.

The thing is, I don’t know what to buy.

Must have electric memory seats and must have decent adaptive LED headlights.

Can’t be a VAG product.

350+ mile WLTP range as we do lots of long journeys - basically needs to do 200 miles on a motorway. Issue isn’t stopping it’s poor charging networks which I’ve experienced enough times to make it a requirement.

No Chinese brands.

Don’t like the Kia or Hyundai, they feel cheap and nasty.

The BMW is offensively ugly. I couldn’t have one on my driveway I don’t think.

Musk aside, the Tesla’s don’t do it for me. I find the ride poor and the lack of proper controls and displays, along with no proper CarPlay, writes off the car.

This really doesn’t leave many options!

The Merc was quite nice, and would be a contender if I could find one without the terrible steering wheel.

The Capri looks really decent but I’m nervous about it basically being an ID4 - will it have all the same issues?

Mach E looks okay, feels cheaper on the inside than the Capri though.

Polestar is okay but have heard of many issues with software and essentially a Chinese car with ownership structure.

The iX3 looked good but the range just isn’t enough.

Anything else I’m missing?

If the ID.7 didn’t have any issues, I’d have bought one, as it’s otherwise a brilliant car overall. Don’t ever feel like I’m missing anything.

Well that leaves stellantis stuff and Renault you haven't mentioned lol. Why the aversion to chinese cars? I've been in the same boat and I can see using your preferences how difficult it would be. I've been looking at the Smart#5, range is probably not enough and it uses zeekr running gear but is designed and owned by Mercedes so unsure if its classed as a "chinese" car to you. TBH a model Y/3 with s3xy dash mod would probably work well for you.

I can't recall what you didn't like about the steering wheel?
Don’t mind the touch one on my ID.7 but found it terrible on the Merc, couldn’t really ever get it to work.

Was the same in 2 different models I’ve driven so think it’s just the wheel

Porsche Taycan?

To get one with the range they’re quite pricey.

Having worked in the data privacy industry, I personally wouldn’t use something which is permanently connected to Chinese servers with GPS, microphones and cameras built into it.

A personal view :-)

I don’t want to have to rely on a third-party device to get it working properly, as compatibility could break at any moment

This is notwithstanding the fact Musk is a mental nut job who has some extremely suspicious emails in the files, so from a purely political perspective I’m voting with my wallet and won’t wish to line his pockets.

If the product ticked every box I would have a think about it, but they really don’t do anything for me.

once open, get on the waiting list for a neue klasse i3 - they can't make the ix3 fast enough ,
though like ix3 they'll only release the cheaper, more dynamic lighter rwd only versions later.

unlikely to match the id7 for a good compromise on saloon height and rear passenger legroom though.

I think he said they are "offensively ugly"

Volvo EX60 sounds like your only option really? Not really Chinese if they make them in Gothenburg.

Is the Capris really £50k new or is that just a silly list price no one actually pays?

The cost of a new in stock car appears to be £40k so £30k for a used one doesn’t seem unreasonable depreciation.

Edit: you said no Kia/Hyundai, what about Genesis?

They aren't exactly range monsters (GV70 driver) but they do charge fairly quick.
