EV general discussion

@BaZ87 I think the new iX3 is the standout car in this situation, it's probably the best overall offering out there at the moment. I'd probably rather the i3, but they aren't going to be out until middle of next year.

I'd possibly take a look at the new Tesla Model Y Performance which is in this sort of price bracket, I do rate them, but appreciate it's a bit more unusual.
I test drove a ix3 whilst my m550i was in, and whilst some bits were great others were really disappointing, think the model Y is still the more rounded car that i'd take.

Impressive changes to the ID3 to become ID.3 Neo

While I didn’t test drive one (iX3) I did have a look and mess around in one and felt all the hype seems to be the usual “mainstream” review hype nonsense. It’s not any more special than pretty much any other mid/large sized premium SUV EV out there.

The interior was trying far too hard to be quirky and the buck toothed beaver look was just terrible IMHO. The Audi Q6 was a nicer car with more kit as standard (ie not locked behind a subscription).

Now the Model Y is not in the same league to be fair for build and quality of materials. If you are looking at something in the iX3 price and premium range, then it’s all about the NVH. So a Model Y should not be on the same radar as it will be a considerably noisier cabin as tests show about 4db louder at motorway speeds. It is a cheaper and considerably less premium package and there is nothing wrong with that if you want a more cheaper options where premium and NVH isn’t a requirement.

No offence meant but saying a Model Y is more rounded is like saying a Mondeo is “more rounded” than an Audi A6 or a BMW 5 series. A Dacia sandero is more rounded than a Golf by the same standard. Anyone with Model Y money is similarly not looking at something £10k more expensive.

I am far more impressed with this than the new Born. It’s great to see them move away from the app touch screen layout. I have a 2023 Born and love it but lack of physical buttons is a turn off that it OK to live with but not ideal.

It does look good and that slight boost in range for the 58kw pack fixes the only real downside to my 22 model. Looks like it will get similar range to our Kona which is perfect for us when it's on family duty and not just commuting.

Exterior looks good from some angles - but I can't un-see in the image of it in the post above the likeness to if a Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius had a baby! I'm also not overly gone on the triangle front quarter glass window - it reminds me of the first gen Renault Espace. Bonnet lines look nice with a touch of Scirocco to it.

Nice to see them moving away from the use of touch buttons, etc.

I'm not sure that just sitting in a car really counts as useful feedback.

Neither is reading someone else’s opinions on how it drives. You can go test drive one yourself instead of reading anything on the internet as that would always be the best advice.

Hahaha to be fair don't think anyone is claiming it's revolutionary from a touch and feel point of view. Apart from that wide screen along the windscreen maybe, but sure the truth is always somewhere in between.

I'll see. I've got until the new year and worst case, I've got access to another car and my businesses van if I have to wait a few months beyond then. When I had the test drive in the iX3, the dealer did say that they're taking deposits on the i3 now for first deliveries at the end of the year. I'll hold on a bit and wait for more concrete info on the i3 pricing etc.

To be honest, the more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards looking at what lease deals are around at the end of the year and waiting for the i3 touring. That's going to be the ideal car for me.

So we have now decided to go down the route of having a dedicated charger installed to the front side of our house. We're not using Octopus to do this but Smart Home Charge, as on the Octopus FB page there has been some complaints about the installations taking a long time to get booked and then difficulties cancelling and getting refunds.
The charger we're getting is a Hypervolt Pro 3 with a 10m tethered cable.

I was looking the other night and was surprised to see the Shooting Break actually appears cheaper. I was looking at the AMG Premium Edition and the SB is £1800 cheaper and for some reason it's better specced than the saloon too. The SB AMG Premium Edition gets the additional passenger side screen but the saloon doesn't - you have to get the AMG Premium Edition+ which is another £1500 on top.
As I'm financing it myself it ended up more expensive for the SB over the saloon, but to be honest the utter disaster the software seems to be and the issues that i've experienced I just didn't want to take the risk on another one, some people have already been through 1 car had it replaced and have had the same issues.

The A6 had its first decent run today and averaged 3.6mi/kw and worked perfectly from home to Reading and back, used about 50% of the battery and the active cruise worked brilliantly.

Thats what I've had for the last 12 months, been very pleased with it as it works perfectly with both our cars an integrated into IOG

i've had my hypervolt home 3 pro installed by octopus, it was painless in my case, but as always YMMV
the hypervolt connects via wifi so you won't have issues with SIM shenannigans unlike the ohme
also, unless you have an incompatible car, IOG prefers to be linked via the car rather than the charger

Having WiFi is why I choose the Hypervolt as mobile is not very good around our village. The hub is directly the other side of the wall it will be installed on.
As a backup, although I doubt if will be needed, there's always ethernet and I would be happy to wire that up.
Thanks for the heads up with connecting it to OIG, the suggestion though is car first then put in the charger when setting it up?
