EV general discussion

I did have a look at the ID7, but presumably you'd wait for the Neo version of that one too? (where they fix all the rubbish bits from the first one, such as no buttons)
What realistically is the range you think you might need in the winter? There are plenty of ev's that fit your specs, does it need to be an estate, what's your budget?

Good Q! Ummm I think up to £400 or so (maybe more if it's really worth it) is achieveable.

Doesn't have to be an estate, but judge me if you will, but I've always preferred a good old estate compared to a Chelsea tractor, but they don't seem to make EVs in anything else these days!

For reference, my 140 I consider just a shorter estate and is practical for my needs now. My partner's car is a Fiesta, which at the moment is fine, but add a dog and child into the mix........not so sure!

Estates are better, but SUVs took over and estates faded.

Yeah the old ID7 has issues but it's reasonable at the moment on a 2 year deal

Crikey, evidently a good deal but still can’t believe I pay £360 a month on a 3m/2y/12k + 40 a month for maintenance

Then again, you could argue I’m paying £360 for not a car so :P

estates are a practical/asthetic/well handling form factor with ICE, but whilst battery density requires 4" of battery pack compromising the the rear passenger space ,
got to give up on that bev dream for now; can help the situation with a longer wheelbase 5m car, but need manouverability too.
maybe the Jag00 will set a trend with rear foot cubbys

If you give up that dream then what does that mean here ?

Thought I'd drop an update: I've had the BYD Sealion 7 excellence for 3 months now. About 1000 miles. My experience:

1. £13 to charge around 90%
2. Smooth ride and have enjoyed the impressive interior, took me a while to get use to the tablet screen. Initially, hated it but after adapting to the quick swipe shortcuts and the using the surprisingly accurate voice control, I've adapted. I would still have preferred a BMW-esque central joy stick for quick picks.
3. Did a 400m round journey and was glad with the 23 min, 10 to 80% charge time.
4. I think it looks great and very competitive with the pricing.

Audi A6 Etron Avant, meets all your requirements. Love mine which is the Performance variant Launch Edition with just about every option and unlike my other attempts at buying an EV in the last 4 months is still going :D

It’s on my list but way out of budget at the moment unfortunately :(

You’re bang on though - it does tick every box for me.

I have a
Taycan Turbo
Tesla Model 3
Audi E-Tron - parents

The Tesla is a better car by a mile when it comes to the infotainment, ease of use and all aspects EV related.

The Audi and Taycan both have very nice interiors but if had to pick just one it would be the Tesla.

Like I said before, the best combo is a 911 and a Tesla Model 3 LR

It's a shame that the Tesla's look so appealing (hate to give money to Musk or the US).

But that last few taxi rides I've had in them I've felt nearly sick at the end of it. Not sure if it's how the driver had it set up, but the ride was horrible, and it was very surge-y. I guess the regen was on high? It was like he was either accelerating or braking the whole time (never coasting when off the throttle).

Plus I do really want to punish manufacturers by not buying a car that has crap ergonomics (ie no/very few buttons)

Sounds like they were using one pedal driving and just mashing it on or off, and let's face it taxi drivers aren't generally known for their great driving anyway

I hate using the brake pedal nowadays because Tesla will just tell me I wasted 0.1% energy by braking
(But I'd much rather use the brake than go into the back of another car)

I get that, but at least with a Tesla you can add buttons if you want easily. They are one of the most easily modifiable cars for an interior perspective and the costs to do so are very cheap. See @tamzzy for he is king of the AliExpress upgrade.

ID3 picked up this morning to get the damage sorted, apparently they already have all the parts so hopefully shouldn't take too long.

Off to see what gangster wagon enterprise are going to have me driving around in at lunch time (it was originally going to be a Fiat500e until I pointed out to the insurers I've got a family and a little one to wrestle into the back).

That's good to know, so now I just have to overcome my hatred for sending money across the Atlantic!
