EV general discussion

Oh god no. I’m perfectly splendid. You were the one putting down another posters view not me.

My interest in this thread has pretty much vapourised. It’s cathartic!

@bainbridge what was the total distance covered and the total damage to the wallet? did it work out cheaper than a comparable petrol car?

I did a similar journey in my LRDM Polestar 2 at the end of May, and the cost savings over petrol were significant. We traveled just over 1000 miles (Newcastle - Dover, Calais - Eindhoven - Hook of Holland, Harwich - Newcastle) and the total cost of charging was just over £140. That price also includes £20 for a single month subscription to Tesla and IONITY. Cost per mile worked out at around 7p, which at the current petrol prices is the equivalent of around 95mpg

I get the question but it makes more sense to ask over the course of a year including the trip what the overall cost was, rather than picking out the most expensive trip and checking the cost per mile for that specifically.

I think what my figures show though is that even on my most expensive trip of the year, at around 7p per mile it still worked out significantly cheaper than using a petrol or diesel car.

I doubt driving a 1.0l Fiesta from 2017 would have made the experience any more enjoyable for me.
Clearly not, however I enjoy the challenge of going from far quicker cars, my previous M235I included, to one where you actually have to think about driving again.
It is very easy in an EV, or many ICE vehicles, to drive fast, it takes very little thinking or effort and anyone can do it. However with an car low on power you need to drive old school and properly. I like having to use a clutch and a gearbox, call me old fashioned but I don't care.
Obviously these skills are somewhat lost these days and most just into a car and disengage their brains because it's just far to easy.

It’s entirely dependent on the type of driving you’re doing. Hooning it around some backroads, sure I get it and there is plenty* of those in rural Spain.

However, there isn’t really anything particularly challenging around driving 100km down a Spanish motorway with a car full of people. It’s the most uninteresting driving you can do. Similarly for pootling around town in traffic. That’s mainly why I focused on the smoothness of the drivetrain and noise.

Dull and uninteresting driving is 99% of what people do and as I said, I really don’t miss an ICE drivetrain and I’m more than happy to make the ‘sacrifice’ for the 1% of driving where it might be more engaging.

*You’ll probably not be ‘hooning’, the nice twisty rural roads typically had 60kph limits (37mph) and around town 30kph was typical (18mph). There were also plenty of rozzers out on patrol unlike here.

You're right, boring as hell in that scenario, but then what car could make that anymore interesting? I think I'd find my i4 boring and would need to find something, or someone, to play games with.

A Tesla with FSD and Caraoke. Beats eye-spy.
In fairness, you’re not wrong :p .

For me it is also as about making it less tedious. A quiet and smooth drive train does very much do that and that is an undersold benefit of a BEV’s.

Getting a BYD Sealion 7 (Excellence with the ~91 kW/h battery) through the Mrs's salary sacrifice work scheme, but now need to have a charger installed.

Seems to be dozens of them to choose from, I'm assuming you don't need something with all the bells and whistles? Going to be going with EDF who seem to not require any communication with the EV charger or car like Octopus etc do on their smarter tariffs, seems to be a flat rate between 00:00-07:00 or so which can just be set on a manual timer. But for future proofing I'll want something compatible with Octopus IOG etc, but nothing much beyond that.

Any recommendations?

Coming off auto hold was very jerky to the point I mainly just turned it off.

I've seen a fair few people with replacement gearboxes under warranty due to a big shunt from the gearbox if you try to accelerate hard in the hybrids or coming off Auto Hold - there's a good chance it was faulty if you were getting the jolt as you moved off.

I use the hyper volt home 3 pro. Can recommend.
My recently installed one is having connection issues using WiFi as it keeps dropping off the network. It isn't signal strength as Hypervolt has confirmed it is good and it is only a metre away from my Netgear Orbi. Waiting to hear back from them now to see what steps they're going to take to resolve it. My expectation is that they'll send me a replacement WiFi module. So far the support has been pretty responsive.
