EV general discussion

Same for me when I tried connecting it to the ioniq 5 it had a fit and I had to reset everything. I just do as above now add what I need each time. Not bothered trying to connect to the EV6 and the Corsa is not compatible.

I've even got the wife trained now, when she plugs hers in she texts me to "add 30%" etc! :D Not sure if you can allow approval on multiple Ohme apps for 1 charger, suppose i should look into it.

I just got asked “Why does my KIA have Ioniq 5 N brakes and seats” by someone at Tesco.

He had to google as he did not believe me that the EV6 GT came first and is KIA’s Ioniq 5 N and Hyundai own KIA.

Nice guy but weird conversation when your standing with two loaves of bread lol.

Looking at getting a dedicated charger in (only had my EV for 3 years) sometimes later in the year now that we will have two Electric cars competing for charge over the course of a week.

Through my company car provider I get a discount on pod point chargers (solo 3 I think). Any reason not to save £200ish and get one I've the plathora of others?

Other option I considered was a commando in the garage as I like the idea of having one available for other "stuff (actual stuff tbd)" but by the time it's done to a similar theoretically safe standard and charger etc bought not sure it's worth the minimal cost saving

I found the fits and starts of the new 6 hour thing annoying, so I just set it to be ready after 6 hrs after I plug it in then it just charges in one go, rather than 30 mins here there and every where.
doesn't ready time have to be after 4am so if you just plug it in late you get less chance of early evening slots that might benefit other household energy consumption.
- can octopus app compare historic usage against standard go to see if intelligent has saved anything.
is there anything for winter to get cheap pre-conditioning from mains, rather than via car battery (all pretty irrelevantr if you've invested in home batteries)

Anyone noticed insurance is mad?

I'm on £370 for a Corsa 2017 currently. Checking quotes on Corsa, 208, MK4 etc EVs are almost £600!!!? What's the deal? Driving 5 years, 35 years young, no claims or anything.

My dad's is pretty much the same as his ICE car no real difference same company

EV insurance is often quite a bit higher, no idea as to the why. I've been driving over 25 years and stuff like pickups, vans and even performance vehicles is like £300 a year and EV is over double that.

Yeah it’s weird and not an EV thing, it’s an insurer thing.

I keep reading these posts about EV insurance being far higher than for “normal” cars, yet my 2023 Cupra Born eBoost 77kWh was £360ish to insure for me and my wife. It was cheaper to insure than a 2017 Hyundai iX20 petrol.

It is insurance, they make it up as the go along. However you are going from something in group 1-12 to something in 24-30, so you need to take that into account.

Because when things like headlights and bumpers are a few grand each and repairers wont guarantee the safety of batteries after an accident. Replacing them costs insane amounts in parts and labour, insurers just write them off and make it someone else's problem. So premiums are sky high.

My Abarth 600e comp was £270, thought that was OK, cheaper than what I was paying on my Up Gti and cheaper than my XC60, but my last Abarth a petrol one was £160-200, so......yeah maybe EVs are more expensive but saying that the 600e does have another 100hp.

Exactly. Unfortunately you just need to do the legwork until you come across the insurer that is looking to boost it's demographic of *insert your profile here* and you'll find a good quote.

Its such a broken industry in general. A colleague needed a new bumper on a Dacia after clipping a moped which needed a new plastic fairing. Total claim over £10k. Years ago I wrote off a colleagues car in a car park bump. His payout... £1400. The "like for like" hire car cost... over £7000.

When I switched my insurance from my old 2017 B-Max to my 2021 Leaf Tekna it only went up by £55 and come renewal time I was back down to just over £300, the next and current renewal was £265 which is cheaper than the B-Max ever was.
