I most certainly charge to 100% prior to a long trip.. Having a home charger, usually we just charge it to 100% in the 4 hour cheap EV tariff window (2-6AM for me) and it's ready to go in the morning.. since a lot of our journeys are the same 150 mile trip, that's enough to complete it in any weather/conditions we've ever encountered thus far.

The majority of the time we are just doing normal commuting and normal local trips and we charge to 80% and then every 3 days or so when it's around 20-30%, pop it back on charge over night..

The fact that light use is generally in the 20-80% range for optimal battery life doesn't mean we think of the 'range' as only being that 60% window, that would be absurd..

I'm the same. I charge once a week to 80% - 90% or so and that does me for most commutes/drive during the week. If we are planning a longer drive I will charge to 100% and that would only be 2 or 3 times per year. But if someone asks me what is the range of my EV, it would be absurd to give them the max range at 80% charge.

It's like telling someone your ICE only has 150 miles of range because more often than not it is sitting with less than half a tank of fuel.

Is this the same guy who doesnt like Octopus due to the expensive standing charge and in the day has a special lamp at his office desk?

Has anyone got a decent spreadsheet set up for manually comparing EV tariffs?

I expect it's no longer a no-brainer due to getting shafted on the day rates and the gas if I switched to someone like Octopus at the moment.
 
Not really not a no brainer in my view. Gas is gas regardless and for me EV has tripled average energy use; I’ve done 14k in a year and have a performance car. I don’t care what standing charge is. (Plus I don’t have a special desk lamp :cry::cry:)

Also factor in even the best AC chargers will only be 90% efficient.

I’ve got a spreadsheet from a year ago, you’ll get more from building your own :)
 
Well that's the thing, the octopus gas price about double what I am paying now and the day rate for electric is 25% more than I am paying now. I have these prices locked in for another 22 months but I can exit with no fee.

My projected mileage is about half yours so its certainly not a no-brainer for me. I was hoping there was a public sheet on google docks I could 'borrow' and plug my own numbers into but as you say, its not hard to make one.

In terms of Octopus at their current prices, a quick back of the fag packet calculation comes out as below:

I think I'll need about 2100 kwh on the night rate, 3700 kwh on the day rate and 13,000 in gas.
So 2100 @ 5p = £105
3700 @ 25p = £925
13,000 @ 7p (!!! :eek::mad:) = £910
= £1,940

VS

5800 @ 20p = £1,160
13,000 @ 3.85p = £500
= £1,660

As you can see my current provider is considerably cheaper due to the gas. I could see if I can switch the electric only, I'll have to see if that will shaft me on gas with my current supplier. Even then we are talking about 10% cheaper electric at the cost of having a restricted 4 hour window.

Sadly the time to swap to Octopus was last month when daytime was only 14.9p.

In the current climate I wouldnt be swapping from any fixed tariff I was on
 
Yes I see with a fixed deal with a long term not quite the apples for apples comparison, I thought you were talking in context of having to get a new deal.

I’m okay until April (13.4p day, 5.5 late evening) but the flexible gas has only gone up to 3.8p. 7p is painful! Better to run the immersion heater at night!
 
The Go ship sailed before I ordered the car so not much I could have don’t about it either way.

I was on a much better deal but the supplier went bust, I managed to switch to something ‘reasonable’ for the time before everything fell apart completely.
