EV general discussion

Spending £30k+ to save money, how's that work. are you selling the m140i?
Sorry slow reply! Yeah M140i is going and will probably be replaced with something else but unsure yet. We actually paid under 30k haha due to the government scheme still in place, its not by much but still a saving at 29.5k. The demand for these are ridiculous hence the silly wait times.

Got an update from the dealer on the I.D. Buzz, delivery times are 12 months

May as well order one as the price will probably be £10k more by the time it arrives!

I’m not even really sure why you’d want a SWB ID buzz with 5 seats (which is all you can buy) over an ID.4 or an Enyak, the latter are much cheaper and are actually cars rather than a van with windows.

It’s very small if you actually need a van and it’s not a great car because it’s meant to be a van.

I can only think it would make a decent EV if you needed to adapt it to carry someone with a disability.

Ordered a new Mini Cooper SE for short journeys, having to run the M140i daily right now is killing me lol.

This doesn't really make any sense. If you only do short journeys then you can't be doing huge mileage meaning that although annoying its hard to see how the fuel cost on an M140i was so unaffordable. Particularly if you have the means to go out and order a brand new £30k car.

I'd have a Cooper SE for short trips too (I'd have got one already if we didn't already have a Cooper of the same generation, really enjoyed it on the test drive!), but not for the financial aspect as surely it doesn't stack up and won't really save you anything.

The demand for these are ridiculous hence the silly wait times.

But you've just said the wait time is only 3 months for you? This is really quick - it took us 3 months to get our petrol one back in 2018 before all the crazy delivery delays?

£85 a week where i am at the moment vs £5 a week to charge maybe abit more if i go visit friends and family who are all very local to me. Like i said, M140 will be going to fund the new car so its not a huge expense in that sense.

Yup was only 3 months for us, Sytner had a build slot available the day we went to visit so we took it. Everyone else i've spoke to who has ordered within the last few months have 6-12 month wait times. Its outrageous but kinda understandable with the shortage of parts.

Is this still true beyond this Autumn?
I renewed my contract recently with Octopus for 1 year so i'm set at least for this period until next year (i hope!). Failing this i do get free charge at work too, new build so they had all the infrastructure put in.

Which tariff is this (peak/off peak rates)? Surely your peak rate must be huge to get such a low off peak rate if you've renewed recently?

Anyway, I really liked the electric Mini and would probably have one over an M140i regardless of the running cost benefit. It's just so nice around town. Though it's quite a downgrade in performance!

Biggest myth going

Surely you are better informed that to drop into that well trodden cliche

You can have a 8.2p/35p tariff for 5 hours between 21:30 and 02:30 fixed for 12 months, or 7.5p/35p between 00:30 and 04:30. If you are really savvy you already have solar and a battery, and you never draw from the grid at peak times, as you can run your house from the battery if the sun isn't shining.

Given the efficiency of the Mini on short(ish) runs where it can hit 5mpkWh easily, you'd be paying between 1.5p - 1.65p per mile. vs 16.5p per mile in a 50MPG petrol version, at £1.81 per litre. The residuals on the Mini Electric are also going to be much better and more in demand as petrol goes out of fashion and prices continue to climb for the fuel.

Just assuming peak is expensive to “pay” for a cheap over night tarriff. See it so many times with assumptions when I’ve yet to see any evidence of the claim.

Is there a tariff available now where the peak rate is no higher than the price cap rate on a conventional tariff?
