EV general discussion

I should have clarified, its a company car, so tax plus contribution, prior to Covid and the other madness of the last few years, it would have just been the tax and what ever the cost of options amortised over the 3 or 4 year term. But now prices have shot up :(

Enyak was our 2nd choice behind the Q8, having looked at a number of EVs. Only thing that held it back was that the version that was available on our lease (Loft) didn't include leather seats. With muddy kids and dogs, that was a high priority.

Was very confortable inside front and rear. I preferred it to the Q4 or ID5 or EV6.

So, given this, and given that my car allowance is taxed at my marginal rate, is there some kind of tax rebate for work mileage that will bridge the gap between own vehicle rates and car allowance rates? Or does the fact that the lease is done by my employer make it a company vehicle?

Who is paying for the lease?

If it is coming out of your car allowance (which is already taxed) then I believe it would be classed as a personal car regardless of who actually arranged it, and so you would be entitled to the full HMRC rate, you can claim tax relief on the difference.

E.g. if you did 1000 miles and were reimbursed 25p/mile, you could claim tax relief on the remaining £200 (20p x 1000), so for a basic rate tax payer that would be £40, for higher rate £80.

Don't forget the rate drops to 25p/mile after 10k miles/year.

I used to have to do this every year, and there was a very quick and easy form to fill in for it. Iirc it took about 10 minutes and got a cheque for about £600 in the post a couple of months later

Thanks very much for this.
Car allowance is just a cash bit added onto my salary - it doesn't do anything except reduce the company's liability for paying into my pension
The lease is a salary sacrifice - and my HR confirmed to me this morning that it's a personal car - so yes I'll be claiming the relief. We're only talking a few hundred miles a year here to be honest but hey, every little helps.

My Model 3 departed today and it’s off to a dealer to find a new home. I’ve already spent the cash twice over

We are still fully electric though and we should be taking the Model Y with the caravan out for its maiden tow in a couple of weeks. I’ll report back on how I get on.

It should be interesting given I’ve never towed anything.

Scary thought now that no one needs training or a licence to tow anymore.

Tell me about it. The official caravan club courses don’t start again until the summer in my area either…

To be fair ‘back in the day’ as my dad would say, you could drive up to 7.5T and a motorbike without any additional training.

By the time I'm in the market for an EV (next year hopefully) the ID2 will be released.

I kinda want all the things that tick the boxes, one of them being LED headlights, doesn't look like Kona or e-Niro have them, not 100% though.

Not only do LED headlights suite EVs better, they're just like BETTER and I want :)

The ID2 is being tipped as one of those game charger EVs as it's €25k, and other models later on, crossover, GTI etc. Looking forward to the reviews on that.

Probably been posted before:

They said that about the ID3, it will change the landscape bla bla. The reality is the chinese manufacturers will change the landscape, the establishment at the bottom end of the market has not ticked the boxes yet, even the low end stuff is too comprimised and too expensive.

I reckon it's not even the manufacturers that will change the landscape.
It's going to be infrastructure. The FUD (justified or not) around range anxiety, queues, time to charge, lack of available local charging infrastructure is the biggest handbrake on all this.

Folk that claim no charging near them and moan have probably never actually looked. There are a lot of charge points dotted all over the place. I usually suggest looking on Zap map etc Al and they'll see there are quite a few. Guy on FB claimed there are none in Cumbria and none in North Wales yet showing them a map soon shuts them up.

Indeed.
However, until you can see a charging station on every corner like you see a petrol station, the doubters are going to spread their seeds...

To be fair im still in 2 minds, I will need to use public chargepoints on a couple of my regular trip, which from a cost POV will be an issue. Tesla are still the only ones that have the infrastructure nailed, shame their cars are not ticking any boxes for me :(

I had a look at our Arval portal earlier, as eventually the Pug will need replacement. I can see the MG ZS 270mile car is the same price which may be a winner. I may even ditch the Merc and go single car for a bit too :O

What's on your wish list out of interest?

Enyaq is looking like a good shout at the moment, i wanted the ID7 but its actually dearer than the EQE and I4 for me. Im in 2 minds with moving to EV or sticking with Phev. With PHEV im waiting for the new Passat/Tiguan/Superb to be released, as they have a ~60 mile range and can be charged at 7kw, so a very usable PHEV now.

Our company car scheme has a pretty decent choice, but some cars just seemed to crazily priced, 4 years ago there would have been no personal contribution, and now its a few hundred quid on top of the tax in some cases.
