EV general discussion

But again, your criticism is that it’s horrible to use when driving but at the same time you say you are responsible driver who doesn’t fiddle with things when driving.

So what’s horrible about the VW touch screen that you need to use when driving when all the driving controls have physical buttons?

I really dislike the touch screens and VW touch screens especially. Maybe the newest ones are better. But even media controls are a faff.

Often with traffic or crashes or change of events I have to change destination while driving. I can do this easily with android auto or carplay. But the VW software not a chance..

We've had radios and heat controls and lots of other buttons for decades. The argument that no one touches a button while driving is a false narrative. It's trying to make excuses for touch screens. Snake oil.

traffic and crashes with car play auto change the route though...

Im finding our new Evoque far less of an issue to use than i was expecting to be fair. And i wanted to hate everything in a single screen.

Honestly it's an industry problem not a VW problem. I rented a Polestar 2 on a work trip recently and the Volvo google automotive software was just as bad as my VW.

A lot of it is familiarity, once you know where things are the touch screens become quite easy to use. It's just finding the damn things if you don't that's the issue.

For sure it's the same for all touch screens. But buttons are mostly better for tasks while driving.

Tesla are open enough to allow many third parties to develop various UI enhancements, whether additional screens, buttons, button bars, rotary controls, etc..

I use the enhance auto commander and s3xy knob and I like little things like a long hold of the rear passenger door will unlock the charge port, so I don't have to get the phone out or get in the car, I can just release it by holding the door handle (as long as my phone is with me).. works flawlessly and nice to have simple quality of life things like that be able to be added..

Yes, like my car, an ipace and its manual door. But it’s a powered flap on Tesla so that’s actually more complicated…

Simpler if the port is unlocked automatically when the car is unlocked. Likewise locked.
It does but it will not release the cable unless instructed via the app or in car screen. There is no button to release the cable in the charge port.

That Enhance auto commander thing can listen to the canbus and send commands so you can do all sorts of things like @Damon said with the door handle to release the charge cable.

The way Tesla want you to do it is to buy their charger that have buttons in the charging cable handle (like superchargers do). It’s one of those Apple things where you have not bought enough of their products yet.

Yeah amazing you can't just push it open if the car is unlocked really haha. Tesla trying to reinvent the wheel for yet another thing
You can just press the flap to open it if closed when the car is unlocked. The issue is the lack of button to unlock the cable if charging.

Edit: It could be worse, I saw a post from someone with a JEEP Avenger who got stuck at a V4 super charger because their car doesn’t have an ability to stop DC charging from the control screens and you also can’t stop the charging on the screen on the V4 charger.

They hadn’t worked out that they could press the button on the charging handle to stop the charge and they had to wait there until the car hit 100% before they could unplug it.

Granny chargers/cables: Are they much of a muchness?

I'll need one for when I visit my parents and I've been looking at this one. It's a brand I know and it's significantly cheaper than the Renault charger and has a longer cable. Plus it has a screen and who doesn't love screens:

all the same. But designs slightly differ. Stuff like a Kia one won’t fit a vw unless you pull the DC cover off

We got a Masterplug granny charger and it's been fine.

You'll want to make sure you can limit it to 6A, or 8A, not just 10A in case the wiring is pants.

My one has been used for 5 hours straight pretty much nightly for the last 3 months and has been fine. I keep the brick part in the garage but the rest lives outside. EVSE itself stays on 24/7 so I can just plug it in.

I read reviews mentioning the screen getting condensation on the inside if left outside but that doesn't apply to me so I can't really comment either way.
