EV general discussion

Unfortunately we need two cars for the school run etc if I'm working. I have a long commute so the Seal is mainly for that. If we do a long trip away we'll probably use the Volvo, at least until I figure out things like the charging network etc, and just the whole electric car thing really.

There really isn't much to figure out these days, you set your destination, get in, drive it, and when the miles indicate low, you stop and charge it, then set off again. You can make it as easy or as complicated as you'd like, analysing charging curves, and optimal charger locations, battery pre-heating, calculating mpkWh with changes in speed/weather, look at which public charger costs the least etc. Or you can ignore that and drive it.

Yeah, you’ll work it out when you live with them for awhile. I wouldn’t think for too much thought into it beforehand.

After 5 years of EV ownership this is exactly how I feel. It helps that even half decent range EVs are available at good prices. I put a deposit on a used Cupra Born V3 77kWh that should get 300+ summer and 250 winter combined miles. At that battery size I didn’t even check if it had a heat pump as it would be moot.

80% SoC most days and the very odd full charge for longer trips. I plan to get in, drive and charge it if I need to. All this talk about having to micromanage a long range trip in a short range EV has not been accurate for at least 5 years.

Hi !

Sorry vague question, I can't make my mind up we have 17/18k for a car decided against salary sacrifice at work.

Looking at the following -

20/21 plate used telsas
22/23 plate used mg4
20 plate used polsters

Originally I had my head set on the Tesla, but the 7 year warranty with the mg is tempting.

Is there anything else I should consider in this price range or is Tesla the best I can afford ?

We already have a Kia Niro in the house, I do 6/7 k miles a year adaptive cruise is a most.

Thank you !

MY 21 ipace? (slight bias warning ;) )
250 mile summer highway, 200 mile winter highway range, has some of the issues of the launch model ipaces fixed (the infotainment and they ditched the 2nd 12v battery) and imo a great car - albeit a so so EV.

8 year / 100k mile battery warranty though at that age the standard warranty will have expired unless it was extended (jag used approved come with 2 years i believe however). HSE has adaptive cruise, not sure about lower spec cars.

mine is going in for a service tomorrow - and its the big one - so my recommendation may change after that :D

17/18 k max, I regularly drive between Scotland and Newcastle via the A1 so 200 miles is my normal
Personally wouldn't touch an MG4 no end of issues with them and the dealers are bad - go on some owners forums or facebook groups and have a sniff around.

Same with the I Pace (sorry @bigmike20vt ) way too unreliable.

Out of your pick probably the Tesla is the best bet tbh, but if you can live with an MG4 size car then I'd say the Curpra Born and VW ID3 should be in your budget too for a 2021-22 car

no need to apologise, to each their own. i am reticent to tempt fate however 2 years so far and it hasn't missed a beat. my understanding is they are just about the most reliable car JLR made (they didnt make it - maybe that is why! ;) ) also - again i really am pushing my luck given it is going in for a service tomorrow but contrary to the awful customer service some get from Jaguar, my experience has been nothing short or excellent. the niggles i had they sorted quickly even though it wasnt bought from a main dealer, and they even gave the car a full inspection when i thought it had a fault (it didnt, it was a faulty charger). but that is just about the local main dealer i guess and maybe i got lucky.

As an EV Teslas are hard to knock and for anyone with the slightest range anxiety a Tesla is the obvious choice. As a car tho they do absolutely nothing for me (almost the opposite of my ipace from my perspective, great EV, "meh!" car!.

add to that you now have the Elon Musk effect which depending on your views may be a positive or a negative ;)

The Tesla is a decent shout, a standard range on a 22 plate will do 200 miles (deliveries December 2021 got a larger 60kwh battery up from 55kwh), otherwise get a long range with the black window trims which have the heat pump as standard.

Things to check for are squeaky/knocking suspension which is the main weak point of the car. It’s not expensive to refresh if it needs dealing with later, otherwise they are pretty reliable.

The super charger network is a bit sparse up in the North East and Scotland. It’s good enough but you are not swimming with options, there are chargers between Newcastle and Edinburgh, in Edinburgh itself and in Washington. There are a few site further north up to Inverness but not many. That of course doesn’t stop you using any 3rd party chargers, they’ll just be more expensive.

I don’t think you’ll get an EV6 or Ionic V for that kind of money yet, I may be wrong but they are also worth a look.

I say this as an I Pace owner who has had nothing but issues with the battery and each issues took months to resolve :(

Since we're replacing a car in our house, me and the missus were discussing whether it was morally acceptable to buy a second hand tesla - we decided it probably was. :)

You can get a 22-plate 77kWh ID.5 for £18.5k

Even has an Aviloo battery heath report with it. :)

Good lord that's slow. Seems far too underpowered for the weight/size.

I can’t say I am a huge fan of the ID.4 or 5 (or any car in primer grey generally - looks like then forgot to paint it) but that is a lot of car for the money.

Yeh I really don't like the flat grey that VW and Cupra have as their free colour.

Metallic grey/silver is nice but the flat "primer" grey is not great.

The id5 looks like a toy car from the side too. So many electric cars just look odd.
