EV general discussion

Does anyone own an EV3 (without heat pump)? I’m curious what sort of efficiency you’re getting at the moment, and when it was really cold at the beginning of January.

It’s very high up on the list to replace my wife’s 2016 Mini Cooper S 5 door.

So I did get over to BMW Chelmsford today, but they were doing staff training in the vehicles and there were QR codes plastered all over them. I did get a few pictures but none are particularly good.

Nice to be able to actually sit in one and get some impressions of the practicality at least. It was unlocked, but not 'on' as such, so the screen functionality was only basic - Looks great in person though and the white leather seats were very comfortable. Even that horrible steering wheel wasn't that bad in person as it doesn't cover up an instrument cluster in the first place (still happy I went for the M Sport wheel though)

Car had done 1532 miles, it was °4 outside and at 90% state of charge is showed 331 miles of range remaining. If you were to do the calculations that means 100% would be 368 miles, which does seem on the low side when WLTP is 500 miles, but I will say this particular vehicle had the 22" wheels. I'm going to guess it changes the estimated range based on driving style and I don't know if they are being driven around to dealers or driven on and off trailers and doing little journeys in and out of dealerships, but it's pretty farkin cold and my GV70 has never seen anywhere near 350 miles of range even in summer. I'm hoping for 400 miles in the depths of winter.

I really liked the look of it and the inside of the car. The only negative thing I could say about it is the panoramic sunroof. It's lovely and big, but on a very overcast grey day it wasn't really letting much additional light in to the cabin.

I do think a sunnier day might lighten it slightly - But other than being fun for passengers it might not exactly be essential - It's the one thing I'm not sure I would option but again, it might look wonderful in mid July. At least you know you aren't going to get sunburnt or come back to a car that's super hot!

I don't think so. WLTP range is known to be hilariously optimistic for EVs in general. So take it with a pinch of salt.

Personally I find EPA minus 10% to be more indicative of real-world range.
For the iX3, the EPA range is 400 miles....so 368 is exactly in line with what I would expect

Don't get me wrong, I never expected to see anywhere near 500 miles of range.

I guess 370 miles in winter is still pretty good, if it did 450 in summer that would be something.

@VincentHanna i knew there was a sense of deja-vu...we were just discussing this last month

It’s the same with ICE MPG claims being about 25% - 30% way over reality. The problem with EVs is the difference between “best case scenario” and reality is so much more noticeable.
MPH claims of 55 mpg, real life 40 mph is barely noticeable when you still get 600 miles to a full tank.
Claiming 350 WLTP but getting 300, or even just 220 in winter is so much more noticeable. Then you factor in the fact these numbers are only if you charge to 100%, but they recommend only charging to 80%.
They don’t help themselves do they?

i think the EPA range minus 10% is more believable as a real world range
WLTP range is too wildly optimistic

I'm not sure you do hear them approaching in a way that's useful for safety.

"...The Doppler effect explains why motorcycles often seem to appear out of nowhere, creating a sudden roar only after they have passed, rather than being heard well in advance. This phenomenon, combined with how sound travels, means a rapidly approaching vehicle can be silent or quiet until it is almost alongside an observer..."

Do you ever walk outside?

WLTP less 20%-30% (weather dependent) is my typical rule of thumb so yeh 370 miles is about right for cold (ish) weather. It will probably lose another 20 or so if it goes below zero.

Random thing: My boss just booked his 21 reg Jaguar i-Pace in for a service with 55k miles on it. He's been quoted £840 for the service because they have to replace the brake lines? Is this just a normal service item these days??
Also, he asked to have his PDC sensors looked at under warranty. They said "Sure, we can have a look on 6 June..."

Seems to on the schedule at around 60k.

Looking on the web no one knows why. Might on a few their other models. Best answer seemed to be "profit generator for JLR". But you need it to maintain warranty.

Still getting used to my "condition based" servicing where the car is going to tell me if it needs something looked at.... Took me a while for BMW to explain that to me when i was expecting my first annual service/health check!....

Its 4 years; 2 years for fluids, 4 for the lines.

Edit : Just dug into it, brake line flexibles are interval 3 so thats 72 Months or 63k in UK markets. I'd challenge your service quote based on that.

Found today, I have a puncture on a rear Tyre on my Model Y Performance.
both on 2MM.... fronts on 3mm... so due soon.
So a couple of 275/35/21's are 400+ EACH

Instead... I bought some 19" Alloys for £650
And found some Hankook Ventus S1 EVO3 (T2) 255/45 R19 104W XL Acoustic Tyres on ebay for £150 each.
(who knows if the ebay seller is genuine or not eh)

Fun times

Are they the original Tesla ones? Sounds like a decent price if so. Would have liked smaller wheels too as the Michelin CC3S were nearly £1300 for all 4 corners, problem was sourcing OEM wheels in 19".
