EV general discussion

The issue with granny charging is usually the socket itself not the wiring behind.

If there is bad contact, it will melt eventually.

You can get EV rated socket facia that are specifically tested to a higher spec. They only cost a few £ so if you plan to granny charge regularly, I recommend a swapping to one.

I’d just granny charge, 10 hours a day you are getting 90 miles back.

I just granny charge at 8 amps a lot of the time on one of those dedicated EV single socket plates. Barely gets warm even when leaving it for 12 or so hours/overnight. I only do 20 miles a day though so it's easy to top up every few days.

The wiring in my house is pretty old so I had an electrician friend fit an EV rated mains socket to a spare fuse in the garage fuse box using a new cable. I'd used the the existing mains socket in the garage to charge my Mini once so I got him to check it out as well. Just as well as it was already showing signs of melting internally.

After replacing my wifes Octavia VRS estate last August with a LRDM Polestar 2, it was my turn to move over to electric. Out went my 2014 M135i, and in comes a 2021 Honda E

Picked it up yesterday and loving it, the turning circle is hilarious :D Was tempted my a Mini or I3 but just kept coming back to the E. The range and boot space just aren't an issue as a 2nd car, and the rear doors make it loads more practical with a 9 and 11yr old to ferry to sports.

Depends on the house. I've seen wiring jobs that would make your hair stand on end, both figuratively and literally. If the house is oldish or worse, then pay a sparky to come and do a quick survey to make sure it's safe.

It could be the best money you ever spend.

Very true lol. When I was doing my home's refurb the ceilings were taken down and the mess of wires were incredible!
This was just the hallway  The electrician did not allow the builder to re-enter the house until he stripped all the wiring and installed temp circuits...

Held off having to run a second car for as long as possible but with kids needing to go places like school and nursery, two full time workers its not possible anymore. Ended up going for a cheap electric run about.
Ordered a Dacia Spring 100. I don't usually buy new, but looking at the second hand market and its residuals, the price of this new and what was available at a few years old - it didn't make much sense buying used. There are also a fair few improvements in the 100 that make it worth buying over the used ones like change to LFP from NMC, better suspension, added reinforcement for stiffness, more power and also has Vehicle to Load. For a sub 12k brand new car I can't really complain. Its also a 1 ton car so gets fairly high efficiency without a huge amount of effort.

We did the same with the Wife’s Viva. Was £9k back in 2015 kept it 10 years and never had an issue. Hoping her Corsa e is the same but it’s just been recalled for a safety issue so maybe not. Lol

Had this delivered today...

Observations:
  1. It tries to be too clever, although it works well. Maybe I'm just getting older but I like a good physical button.
  2. It has far more power than it needs. 680hp is just insane.
  3. Platinum Grey is actually brown.
  4. Despite being on 22" wheels, it rides much smoother than the XC90 on 20s.
  5. The Bowers & Wilkins is probably the best Hi-Fi system I've ever heard.
Altogether I feel a bit like a chav at a garden party, not quite worthy of how well refined it is, but I'm enjoying it thus far.

I know someone else who was about to do this, then I pointed them in the direction of the 74/25 plate used Mazda MX30's for a shade over £10k, they actually said they preferred the Spring from somethings, but the Mazda won out in the end due to design/style, shame it missed V2L and weighs almost twice as much! :)

yes ex60 colours really smart - power probably need to consider bhp/tonne ? ..
after watching video on the new axial 360 ev motors with 1000bhp in an 18kg motor (already in production) about 1/3 weight of rolo format
