EV general discussion

Haven't used it for any long trips, tomorrow is the first 110 mile trip.

I do 130 miles daily half motorway half country back roads and easily manage it in my GT with an %80 charge with usually around 20-30% left at the end. I think you will manage 110 easily.

Yep 110 is nothing but getting used to range on an EV is a process so pretty normal to make extra sure on those first trips. Great car but the nose on that iX though, oof.

It's growing on me :D Inside is a lovely place to be.

I just couldn't bring myself to buy a CUV/SUV unless there as some dire need to do so, really dislike the sitting position and styling (on most of them). At least there a lot more 'normal' cars coming to the BEV market these days.
I needed a hatchback boot so the model 3 was out of the question and other electric cars were either crap, had inherent faults or they were more than I wanted to pay.

Ddid you find interior sombre.
surprised they hadn'r put that 280 motor & lsd in many of the other stellantis cars like r5, 408, not even 290, just (non-sporty suspensioned) mokka,
otherwise seemed to be in link-step with vw and their 280 ap550 motors
It's in a couple, the Mokka GSE, Abarth 600e I have and the forth coming e208Gti. It drives different in most of them, I did the Junior and Abarth 600e back-to-back, the Junior was great but felt very grown up, the 600e a little more fun, quite surprising how different they could be.

Hi there

Having driven a few EV’s now I decided to take a Hyundai 5N out as it’s had a lot of praise.

Needless to say this is the first EV I’d be willing to buy, feel Hyundai have truly nailed the software and fake gearbox / engine simulation absolutely spot on.

Those who buy a car as a fun car and truly enjoy driving the 5N is the best Performance EV I’ve driven, note I say performance as you could argue a Honda Super N is also great fun in a less powerful smaller package.

Hyundai engineers have setup the paddles and the 8 speed simulated gearbox perfectly, full throttle upshifts jolt (torque interruption) and downshifts pop and gurgle. The car is also quite a bit slower in manual mode as well meaning you can somewhat enjoy the performance more as feels more like a 400HP car and is generally an engaging and enjoyable experience to use the paddles and have the sound track in ignition mode.

Hit the N shift button again and the paddles become regen and gears (simulated) no longer exist but now sounds like your driving on the motorway in second gear so best to turn sound off. In this mode the car has far more instant power and a lot more of it and feels the 600HP for sure. Pressing boost button gives you an additional 40HP for 10s.

In short fun B road or relaxed motorway driving the simulated gear mode is fantastic and if your having fun at traffic lights then go back to Auto whilst in N mode for maximum performance and acceleration.

Styling is a bit too much SUV for my liking but it’s very well equipped and rides ok with 4 suspension settings and you can configure it like crazy. Some surfaces and bumps show up the excessive two tonne plus weight but it’s not bad.

Shall drive a 6N next as I do prefer looks as a fun car for myself not sure I could buy one though as though amazing it is and very fast it’s missing something still but if the Mrs ever sells the Honda E I’ll buy her one of these as the replacement, more space, more range and something that’s truly fun whilst been a triple AAA.

Also looking forward to trying new M3 and Denza Supercar though feel the 5N and 6N at 65k asking is a lot of car for money but they do crash in value hard and as they have a 5/8yr warranty feel a 3yr old ish one at 30-40k is a great buy.

Found anywhere allowing test drives in the 6N yet?

I'm struggling to find anyone that's allowing them. Been messed around by my local dealer which was a bit of a shock as they have been fantastic from a servicing perspective.

Coming from a Seat Leon FR FOR 8 years, it reassuring to hear a few people have said it takes a some time to adjust to the seating position of an SUV - I thought it was just me!

Personally think it is somewhat one of those things you either like or don't like - I've never really liked the seating position on a regular car much prefer a higher up position though I prefer large SUV, pickup or even van to small or mid-size SUV for seating position.

We are enjoying our Chinese PHEV. It’s not just good for a Chinese car, it’s just a good car. Enjoying the electric experience and cheaper motoring. In a few weeks, we’re doing a trip from York to Wick and back in 24 hours, so we’ll see if the 750 mile range is remotely close. This will be a circa 1000 mile round trip.

Very different to a 400BHP Cupra but I don’t miss it. It’s got plenty of ooomph and overtakes easily. Instant torque. It’s a very different experience and much more chill. And with virtual silent drive train and double glazing, it’s brilliant.

We picked it up on July 10th and brimmed it, since we got it we’ve covered about 350 miles and still have 592 mile petrol range (same tank) as we’ve been using electric and charging at home.

It’s a little monotone maybe but wouldn’t say somber.

I think Chinese cars are good these days, they iterate so quickly they have gone through several generations of development to catch up while European OEMs have basically stood still for the last decade

Test drove a Toyota C-HR+ and a Volvo EX30 at the weekend to get a feel for them, both really nice to drive. Toyota's steering wheel is almost comically small but I imagine something you get used to quite quickly. Enjoyed the EX30 too, surprisingly wasn't too bothered by the lack of any sort of dash in front of me.

Got a test drive booked for both the Volvo EC40 (and a 2024 C40) and the Renault Scenic EV this Thursday so it'll be good to get a feel for those as well - then really comes down to looking at costs etc.

I'm more tempted by Volvo because of our experience with the XC40 - but I did really enjoy the 40 minutes or so driving the C-HR+ and the Renault pricing seems really appealing. Volvo seemed to be very keen on me understanding the benefits of getting a new EX30, doing the usual of throwing in a 4 year service plan, free home charger and being able to get me a price for my XC40 that makes the whole thing a lot more appealing.

Looking at EX30 myself but as someone pointed out to me here there currently a recall, actually two recalls on the vehicle one potential fire issue with battery and the other some kind of seat safety issue.

I'd be making sure it's sorted before purchasing.

Yeah, in fairness the Volvo sales guy did mention the battery recall.

It looks like there's a battery recall for the 2024-2026 extended range models (released up to this April). Dealer did say that anything 'new' from around April onwards is resolved. Seat safety looks to be just the 2024 models?

I did like the EX30, I'm more tempted by a C40 just from a size perspective - but need to actually test the EC/C40 this week to get a feel for it.

Just request one for 24hr on Hyundai site, a few offering this.
I've got a track day at Oulton Park in a 6N now FOC as dealer I took 5N out with submitted a request which has been approved, time to shred some tyres. :D

Destination charging - a reminder we need not just available charging, but reliable destination charging!

So, we recently had a nice cottage in the lakes with EV Charger and dedicated parking etc (£50 supplement) which was ideal as public charging is a bit spread out in the lakes, and peak rates from Insta-volt are £0.92/KWh, knowing we could just charge overnight and relax in a place with sporadic charging was ideal..

However, the owner had set it up not in simple plug/charge mode but decided he needed to authorise each individual session, so the instructions in the house just said plug in, someone will be remotely alerted and the charging will be authorised.. The problem is, he failed to do this through the entirety of the first two days, and finally on getting some contact with him, agreed I'd plug in every other day at 5:30 so he had a time he could manually check the app in case he missed a notification..

For the first two days, I wasted about 1.5 hours driving to and sitting around public charging at off-peak rates really late in the evening, so do drinks/meals out for those two days, and then even on the subsequent days, he took over an hour to authorise the charges, so I ended up having to wait around and had it not worked for 2 hours would have to go and public charge, so we had to just slum it for those evenings and effectively stay in which is something I don't usually do on holiday.

At the end of the holiday I just politely requested getting the £40 for public charging refunded and leave any decision on good will down to the letting company. but they just turned around and said no reimbursement or good will.. and it was our fault in incurring costs as we could have just stayed at the cottage, we chose to use the car for those two days and the 'faff' of the subsequent charges would have negligible impact..

Had a look, seems to be weekdays only, but I might just do this, it's worth a test!

New price would need to be pretty fantastic when you can get a Extended Range 69kWh Ultra version for £25k with less than 10k miles on it. Not sure what the obsession is with throwing in servicing with a BEV either, just take it to Clevely or similar an keep warranty but pay a fraction of the price.

Seems it quicker then the 5N

Nearly 100kg lighter, so you'd expect it to be and its no doubt had some further software tweaking. 5N did feel rather heavy, because it is, be interesting if the firmer setup and actuall close to 100kg reduction can be felt in 6N, if its good on track I will no doubt apply for a 24hr loan of one.

That is really bad. Shocking review incoming I hope.

I still see it at hotels where provision is offered on the website and then it is either out of service or simply not there!

I need to time it right but I'm going to try and get out of my current company car early and into a full EV. In doing my due diligence (more like getting ready with responses to the push back) I haven't even factored in destination charging in my proof that charging during work trips won't negatively impact my time at all. I'd certainly see it as a nice to have if it happens to be available and actually working.
