EV general discussion

Exactly. Unfortunately you just need to do the legwork until you come across the insurer that is looking to boost it's demographic of *insert your profile here* and you'll find a good quote.

Its such a broken industry in general. A colleague needed a new bumper on a Dacia after clipping a moped which needed a new plastic fairing. Total claim over £10k. Years ago I wrote off a colleagues car in a car park bump. His payout... £1400. The "like for like" hire car cost... over £7000.

Not just broken, it's corrupt as hell. On the insurer and the customer's side. How many people actually declare everything honestly? And how much price fixing and fiddling goes on by the insurer? Lots.

I declare everything honestly, why wouldn’t you? It’s pointless having insurance if you don’t.

Apart from demographics and general appetite to insure and build the insurance book, another factor that can affect insurance pricing is it can depend on the market (hard/soft) and whether the insurer needs to cover other costs (be that 1x, 2x, 3x layers etc). My mate is in insurance (as is the wife but she's in PI) and deals with large motor claims, when we had all the flooding a few years back they got hit for a supercar showroom for multi-millions in payout (even with the use of layering), a car repair garage he covered had a fire over night, only damaged the building, however their ways of working were to open all the windows of the cars they were working on and leave the keys in the ignition, 40+ premium cars (BMW, Merc etc) all got written off for smoke damage. Some of the claims he gets are truly eye-watering.

Anyone noticed insurance is mad?

I'm on £370 for a Corsa 2017 currently. Checking quotes on Corsa, 208, MK4 etc EVs are almost £600!!!? What's the deal? Driving 5 years, 35 years young, no claims or anything.

My dad's is pretty much the same as his ICE car no real difference same company

Going from a 2023 Audi S3 to a Tesla Model 3 AWD was actually a lot cheaper with the Tesla. ~£150 cheaper over the year last time. Renew in September so that'll be fun.

Because some things they can't find out for themselves (thanks data protection) and it pumps your premium?
Maybe I'm in the minority but I'd rather be up front and honest, safe in the knowledge I am insured for what I'm paying. Cost me a fortune when we had the extension at our house, I wasn't go to not declare it. Whats the point

Same. Peace of mind is severely underrated. Loads of people go "nah it's cool I won't get busted" until one day they're involved in a crash and the next few months of paranoia and anxiety are absolute hell.

I know, it used to be me.

Our friends parents had a big extension on their house, never declared it. Few years later a big fire breaks out and they lose almost the entire house.

Insurance, correctly, deems that the house was not remotely correctly insured, hadn't even had mention of the extension or the new value and so they could only pay insurance coverage on what the policy was. Whole thing was very messy - but really just highlighted that there is absolutely no point in not declaring these things. It catches up eventually.

What's the general consensus on Dacia Spring 2026 100 Extreme? Went for test drive this afternoon and was surprised how nippy it is. Made a point to get onto a dual carriageway for a short time, coming from a Corsa 17 that has 88 horsepower I thought it was very capable got to 70 quicker than I expected (with 0-40 being stupid as a non ev user) even overtook at around 80 a few times before turning off.

Felt fine inside to me at least apart from the door tinny noise when shutting. Insurance is still shocking though.

Are you looking for something small or cheap or a bit of both?

If you prefer something a bit better, that has lost basically all of its value but is a nice vehicle, then have a look at the Mazda MX30

Bit of both ha, I'm not fond of big cars. I do think the screen looks a bit silly in the Mazdas though. Been looking around the 2023 models - 208, Corsa and MG4 range up to £12k. But am very attracted to what new car comes with warranty wise etc, I'm rarely on roads that are higher than 50.

It’s borderline an actual car let’s be honest.

Drove from Ayrshire to Manchester and back yesterday in my i4. Around 450miles. Longest trip I've done. Averaged 3.4kwh, which seemed a bit low to be honest. I was hoping for closer to 4kwh.
Cruise control at 70 the whole way, one heated seat on and split climate control, one at 21 and the other at low.
What kind of difference would heated seat and split climate make?

Also, almost got caught out as I charge at Arnold Clark at home, but didn't realise the Manchester ones shut at 8pm! But after another charge after Carlisle Arnold Clark it was all fine. 39p a kWh isn't bad.

None at all. Air con uses a little bit but nothing compared to the heating.

It’s the speed that does it - sit at 60 and you’d probably have gotten 4mpkwh, but I’d rather sit at the speed limit and take a hit on efficiency. It’s a balance!

I drive my i4 in the same manner I did with my M235i, the lowest kwh in winter was 3, but currently around 4 with the air con on at all times.
Having a heated seat on and using cruise I'd thought will not help at all.

Heated seat will use a miniscule amount of power - maybe 100W if you're absolutely maxing them as hot as they go - if that 450 mile trip took 8 hours, the heated seat will have used 0.8kWh of energy. In reality, i'm guessing it was probably on low and so it's more like used 0.3-0.4kWh at most.

Why would cruise make a difference compared to maintaining 70 mph with your right foot? Also a heated seat is about 50 watts max while it is actively heating which isn't all the time.
