EV general discussion

Borderline funny actually

I asked the chap what his plan is for other cars which don't have them - and he didn't really know the answer. Was a case of "My checklist says this".
I've dealt with companies in the past who just mark it as not present then they would try to bill you for it later once it's returned. Never had that madness of we won't take it because of a cable

I don't get it. So what are you supposed to do? Find a charging cable, which wouldn't be theirs, and give it to them just so they can take the car?!?!?

I am genuinely confused.

When it all settles down and 90% of us are driving EV's the cost per mile unless you charge from home and the tax will be the same or likely more than it is now.

It has to be, the motorists teats have been a go to for milking to fund government coffers for too long now to lose that income stream. Cutting costs isn't an option because they've lost control of spending and no party will be bold enough to put an end to the likes of PiP to reign it in.

They just need to ease it in otherwise they will stop the transition to EV in it's tracks. 3ppm eVED is just dipping a toe in the water and the reaction was pretty chilly so I can only imagine the next step will be to hike up ICE, making the EV swap seem even sweeter despite eVED then do a phased ramping up on both sides until EV hit's critical mass. From that point they only need to ramp up EV as every one is committed.

There is no stopping it so may as well jump on board now during the golden years. I have very little control over the company car but I'm half tempted to swap our Polo for an MX-30. Problem is it just doesn't do enough mileage to warrant the swap.

Company turned up today to collect the Hyundai.

Asked me where the charging cable is - to which I told them it didn’t come with one.

They’ve told me they can’t take the car without a charging cable. So it’s still on the drive.

I am SO glad I haven’t kept it. The most disorganised company I have ever dealt with.

Genuinely cannot understand the lack of intelligence sometimes.

I shouldn't laugh bit this really is a comedy show at this point.

I'm seeing a lot in the news about these new solid state batteries, is it just hype or are they going to be the game changer they are saying?

Supply is limited, they very expensive and everyone and mum has some kind of patent running. Could change the game in twenty years?

Got my Tesla back yesterday. After just under 2 weeks of BMW I4 Gran Coupe 'ownership' to say I'm relieved is an understatement. I really did not like that car. I'm sure some of it was down to the fact it was a hire car and not my own and I expect it was missing a lot of the additional add-ons but for a car £10k more than my Model 3 it felt like a step back in so many ways.

Having to use a physical key is a nuisance. I realise how much of a rubbish whine that sounds like but after almost a year of not using a key and not having to lock/unlock a car it felt like an inconvenience. A few times during the hire I'd walk back to the car and see it unlocked as I forgot to lock it.

I've used Apple CarPlay pretty much for the last decade. Now not having used it for a year, having to go back to it I don't miss it at all. It was a bit handier than the BMW software but the interface felt like it was in an awkward position to tough, being so high up, and the BMW wheel thing felt unintuitive to use with it.

The sound system was rubbish. Ended up resorting to just using audio books as music sounded lame.

The massive bonnet and solid roof makes you feel like a sardine in a tin can.

Lack of double glazed windows really lets a lot of noise into the cabin. Noticeable on the motorway when lorries drive by.

Doors don't close with a nice 'thud' than even my older cars did. They close with a heavy rattle. Almost like a cheap car door with ballast within it to make it feel more premium.

Battery life is so-so. Did Bristol > Exeter > Bristol yesterday. Left the house at 100% and got back on 27%. That's only a 160 mile trip. Wouldn't trust it to get me to London and back without worrying about charging.

I'm sure if it was my own car and I added a few other options onto it I'd like it a lot more but the one I had (250kW eDrive40 M Sport 83.9kWh) left a lot to be desired. I did like the seats though. If they were ventilated I would've said they were superior to the Tesla seats but as they were only heated, they are not.

Just not sure why anyone would buy one unless they were dead set on having a BMW

I was quite intrigued with QuantumScape when they started partnering with VW for solid state, but that never seemed to amount to anything, maybe I'll hold some shares for the next 20

Because we all have different views and opinions? I would never buy a Tesla because some things about them are simply stupid.
No way!? I thought we were all a hive mind...

I'm not claiming to be an authority on what cars people should go out and spend their money on. I'm just sharing that after my experience with the car i was loaned I'm not sure what people like about that particular car I used which would lead them to buy it and I see a lot of them on the roads.

As I also pointed out, I have no doubt lots of the issues I had with the particular car are likely due to it being a hire car and it having the base spec in every option and likely had it had a few other bits I would've had a very different experience.

But the one I had? I think you'd just have to want a BMW to buy that car with your own money

VW is in serious trouble atm, I suspect they're throwing every dart at the board in the hope of hitting a bullseye.

With pretty much any of the BMW's i looked at, you had to add on a few of the additional packs to get a decent spec. Have said it before on here that my mate got the i4 M50, it was a salary sacrifice special offer, so was a cheaper deal. The base level of equipment was terrible, even on that model, you needed to add tech pack, comfort pack, tech/comfort+ pack etc etc.

That seems to be a massive thing with German cars. The Chinese are like "pay us for the car and get everything" whilst the germans not only want you to pay for every single optional extra, but they're chancing their luck with nonsense like subscriptions for heated seats, ads on the infotainment system, and any other way they can squeeze money out of their customers.

Even if these ideas get canned, the reputational damage is done.

Yeah, this one was a 2024 plate and had no wireless charging and the main USB connection was a type A. It had a single USB C tucked under the arm rest but I thought that was crazy on such a new car.
