EV general discussion

That seems to be a massive thing with German cars. The Chinese are like "pay us for the car and get everything" whilst the germans not only want you to pay for every single optional extra, but they're chancing their luck with nonsense like subscriptions for heated seats, ads on the infotainment system, and any other way they can squeeze money out of their customers.

Even if these ideas get canned, the reputational damage is done.
Exactly this, sure Tesla & Chinese branded cars provide the customer with a spec which is the default which covers most things you’d want and very few extras you need to buy.

Although the new models of the Tesla’s are reversing this trend. Having ads on a car infotainment system is just a massive no.

That's partly why I went with Tesla for my new EV. Apart from the silly FSD subscription, which seems pointless in the UK atm, you pay for the car and get the car. No add ons, subscriptions for map updates or any of that rubbish that I got fed up with my the BMW I sold.

I was in an i7 last week, list price of £130k and no adaptive cruise. I think you can perhaps pay and add it but I mean c'mon...

I'd still take an i7 but I have to say now I'm used to the Tesla, the software is just so excellent. It's a bit like going to a mid-range Android phone when you're used to the stability and simplicity of an iPhone. I've not tried BMW's latest tech setup yet, but it's only on the iX3 at the moment.

It’s a shame the Model S has been pulled from the UK.

The 3 isn’t a premium enough product for someone considering a high end EV, and I think there’s a gap in the market for it.

If they could take a 3, add in some basic things which are missing, such as:

Proper projector headlights (like the Y)
Proper sensors including radar for cruise
HUD and proper screens
More buttons

I feel like it’d sell well, and make other manufacturers think twice about charging for basic features.

We need more disruption in the market again, especially the premium segment.

Saw my first electric artic this morning, a Mercedes Actros E or E Actros. The front looks really bulky with no grills.

Anyone seen the advert for the new Leapmotor B-05? I saw the ad on the tv and looked it up and it seems to be a decent enough car, good spec, RWD, 300 mile WLTP plus it's a hatchback and not a SUV like most ne models seem to be these days.

What's the base price on them? And then by the time you'd added the things you also want/need?

The 'First Edition' is £57k, but this has a few options. I've seen the base price mentioned at £53k, which sounds about right.

Would have been great if they could have delivered it under £50k, avoiding the luxury car tax too. That'll be stacked with the 3p per mile tax from April 2028, which will further annoy everyone. Assuming that goes ahead.

Ah yeah I forgot there was a new Model 3. Is it full projector or part projector part reflector like the old adaptive system?

It's the usual LED matrix style setup, it's very good though, the beam moves around and all that stuff. Seems as good as BMW's adaptive LED system, if not better.

Laserlights were on another level compared to the newer Adaptive LED.

When I had a G20 320d, it went it for some warranty work and I had a G21 320i with the Adaptive LEDs. Nowhere near as good.

The lasers are nuts in the dark for distance.

A real shame. I actually quite liked the look of the Model S to the point that I could probably overlook the bland interior. My manager had a 2019 one that he actually sold last week. Not many of them around.

It was the only Tesla I considered, but for me personally too many compromises for it to be worth genuinely considering it.

I had them on my 840i, they were good but I didn't see a dramatic difference. I used to drive around trying to get them to activate down dark country lanes, I was never quite sure if they were on :p

They've binned them now anyway.

Oh really?

I find it massively obvious on the i4 and did on the 320d too.

The centre of the beam just gets brighter and you can see the blue hue from the lasers as the headlight turns.

When I had the 320i it was like there was a sticker over the middle of the beam pattern by comparison.

Yeah, I've not tried it on a 3 Series so perhaps the difference is more obvious. Interesting.

Out of those the only one I'd feel would be a benefit is the HUD.

After a year of no buttons, i don't really see what people miss. How often are you changing the temperature in the car? I've also grown to prefer not having an instrument cluster in front of the wheel so I can see more of the road. But I appreciate not everyone prefers it that way

Having had cars without buttons for basic things, I am very glad to be in a car with them again.

Things just work. No faffing and everything can be done while driving without issue.
