EV general discussion

Noticed something strange happening every now and again on my commute. Not every time but more than enough not to be a weird coincidence.

There's an exact spot on the A5 where I lose all driving assists, dashboard flashes up the orange warnings for lane/light/front/whatever else assist being unavailable.
Within 50m everything is then available again.
Only thing I can think of is it's a dead spot for the car to connect to VW servers but I wouldn't expect that to disable stuff that just relies on local sensors/cameras.

Is there an emergency services facility of some kind around there?

There is a spot on my commute and I don't think it is coincidence where I pass an ambulance station and sometimes all my driving assists, etc. restart at that exact spot.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/2xUbYb7mA4qA1m5q6 pretty devoid of anything, happens as I enter from the left and they're back on before I reach the M6 slip road joining the roundabout. Never happens on the way home coming down the opposite side of the carriageway.

Yeah can't see any obvious explanation there. According to BIDB there seems to be fairly good mobile signal coverage there.

Does your GPS stay on track?

My ADAS systems all throw a wobbly and declare themselves unavailable if the car thinks it's not on a road anymore.

Hi there

So yesterday I was driving this on the full Oulton Park circuit absolutely flat out:

6N.webp

To be honest I was shocked, we arrived at Oulton Park thinking we had mixed the day up as there was zero official Hyundai representation on site. I sheepishly walked into the marshals office and said I am hear for a 6N test drive but I cannot find any 6N, they were like oh do not worry you are in the correct place.

In short there was an MSVT track day on and my track time was during the 1hr lunch break where I got to drive the 6N safety car on a circuit I had totally to myself, WOW!

So one lap was done with instructor, we did a Le Mans swap on the start / finish straight where I proceeded to launch control off the grid, very effective and supposedly 3.2 0-62mph, felt every bit of that. Then put the car in gears mode with everything maxed out, suspension, steering, brakes, power etc whilst in manual and engine ignition sound track.

How was it?

If your a petrol head or driving enthusiast but have found most EV's boring to drive as per myself, for example I do not find Tesla's latest Model 3 any fun at all and everything else I've driven has been a little meh apart from the Honda Super N, but admittedly that is a small slow city hatch. So if you want performance and interactivity the Hyundai 6N is easily the best EV I have driven, it is a hands down absolutely wipes the floor with anything else on market.

Now of course driving a 5N on road and a 6N on track it is hard to offer a direct comparison but Oulton Park did have a 5N safety car as well and those who driven both echoed what I felt I could feel and that is the 6N feels a more planted vehicle and less floaty, they also agreed the 6N does feel faster though power wise they are identical but the 6N has better aero and weighs close to 100kg less.

On track I drove the car in its 60% rear, 40% forward bias, around 8 hot laps and 2 warming up laps, we used 30% worth of battery and the car felt good. Yes its no Caterham because as good as the car does hide its weight in braking zones and when your accelerating past 100mph you can definitely feel your hauling and trying to stop a significant mass but at no point did the brakes fade. Though the car lacks steering feel there is some, but on track it is more the tyres that communicate by noise rather than actual steering feel which also worked just fine. As expected weak point is weight and of course you'd drain the battery pretty fast on a full on it track day and no doubt destroy tyres rather quick too.

Power is exceptional, especially coming out of tight 2nd gear corners the acceleration (650PS) is pretty immense and hits hard and instantly and the car is pulling strong and fast to 100mph.
The simulated gears and engine as per 5N are absolutely spot on, in some ways this pretend DCT gearbox is actually better than some real DCT gearboxes that is truly how good it is, massive kudos to Hyundai on this.

The cars chassis communicates well and it is playful had the rear kick out on some corners but was easily controlled and progressive, but cars inherent balance was understeer but easily managed.

Overall a superb car, I'd not buy one to do track days with, but it is certainly capable and would no doubt hang if not beat an R35 GTR on track for example and dare I say it would probably offer a similar level of fun, but those who know me will know I've never been fond of cars that weigh beyond 1500kg for track use and the closer you can get or below 1000kg is the sweet spot, though McLarens excluded as my 600 LT Spider is 1440kg and it literally blew my Lotus Exige out the water as felt like a true race car on the track but then does the road car thing better than most road cars. For me nothing beats a Caterham for fun on a track!

Still back to the 6N, if your enthusiast and EV is a must or a somewhat sensible car the 6N is bloody fantastic. :)

Big thanks to Hyundai having an entire full layout race track totally to myself for an hour was simply epic! :)

I have enjoyed all the N cars but they really need a small one, they are all massive SUVs, that 6N is almost 5m long, fingers crossed a 3N drops with all their software trickery, then I'd be interested, I don't need a 700hp barge, the 280 is plenty in my 600e it's size is plenty, just need it in a better car :D not that it's bad, it's just no N.

Agreed would be ace if they did a 3N sized hot hatch with either a FWD 320PS configuration with a mechanical LSD and the software trickery or maybe even a 3N AWD with 450PS, even better if they could push weight under 1700-1800kg on a FWD version.

For me there is simply no getting away from the weight of most EVs and that compromise is where just about every hot EV falls over. The Alfa junior is about the most balance EV I’ve come across, but even that is a relative chunk at 1600kg.

Mine weighs 2.2 tonnes and you feel it but it handles it pretty well the adaptive suspension helps. The weight does help you put the power down I can use almost all of the torque from a standstill with minimal slip.

I do agree a N Ioniq 3 could be fantastic something smaller and agile. Rumour is it’s going to use the EV3 GT setup but will have to see.

Does anyone know if its possible to access the charging sessions that Octopus IOG has given you historically?

I have a problem whereby Ive been charged peak rate after plugging in my car in the day and Octopus has initiated the charging, which should be at off-peak rates.

Octopus has asked for evidence that they initiated the charging, but this data doesn't appear on the app nor in the Zappi app or downloadable data from the Zappi website.

Tell them to go away and prove they didn’t.

If smart charging was enabled the charger will have been locked out and you didn’t click boost charge (they will have that data if you did), the only logical conclusion is they started it.

Update. It wouldn't be a LiE purchase without a little complication.

The seat comfort is unfortunately a deal breaker for me and the wife. This being our first SUV we thought it was something that was just an adjustment period. The seats in the iX combined with the driving position cause me a lot of lower back discomfort which I cannot push through. So we went back to the drawing board.

We like a lot about the car but decided an SUV isn't for us, we wanted some more familiar. So sticking with BMW since we really like a lot about their EVs and excluding their SUVs we found ourselves looking at the i5. Similar in many ways to the iX but in a different package.

Finding an i5 that had the spec was little tricky, as most are clearly ex company cars with very little options. There also aren't that many close by and traveling too far wasn't an option.

Yesterday we visited North Oxford BMW to take out an i5 M60 in Oxide Grey. After an extended test drive we both agreed it was the replacement for the iX. Seating position was more traditional and it has thigh bolsters along with extending under thigh support, which the iX doesn't have either. The car itself has all the options we want, except pano roof, but that we decided was an acceptable compromise.

The drive was excellent. The power and acceleration was something else, with 600bhp and that EV torque. Handling was leagues better than the iX and the suspension made for a more comfortable ride. The iX really needs that air suspension. A much more handsome car compared to the iX.

Hoping to pick it up next week after they sort a few bits.

Picked it up today, very pleased. It handles and drives so much better than the iX and seat comfort is much improved.

The acceleration in this thing is really strong. I think BMW have it 0-62 in 3.8 but many have timed it at 3.3.

Yeah, the i5 m60 is great, we have one as a company car in work, which I borrow quite often.. although ironically it’s looking to get replaced with an iX M70 as the owner likes the air suspension, quilted seats and that it comes highly spec’d as standard with barely any options.. They got offered such good lease rates I was asked if I fancied a company car as they could get a better deal on 2 x iX M70’s which are seemingly being fire-saled.. I don’t know if I want to pay the BIK , but the car would be free otherwise..

The only complaints with the i5 m60 are mainly they wished they had the estate, and the range/efficiency are not at all good, but you don’t buy this kind of thing for range, otherwise it’s as you describe, very refined..
