EV general discussion

The only recall my IONIQ 5N has had was to sign a disclaimer to leave 'Left Foot Braking' in the software :D
They offered it OTA too. A few people got letters whilst they were still working on pushing it out OTA due to the issues that were identified in other countries so some did visit a dealer very early on.

The N/GT models are a very small percentage I know two that have had issues both needing the ICCU replaced (One being mine). If you look on the Ioniq 5 and EV6 owners clubs on Facebook both have pols showing worldwide users that have had issues. There are thousands of them. It affects all EGMP platform cars they all use the same ICCU.

I have had it fail and they do just cut out. Mine went pop on the M6 in my Ioniq 5 it made it just under a mile then was completely dead I had it recovered to Hyundai who by chance had an ICCU they had ordered for another customer who had decided to refund her car. I was told if not it would have been on order from Korea as dealers do not stock them. There was no warning before hand and it charged fine the previous evening.

My EV6 GT had the ICCU replaced at 12 months old and recently had the 12v battery replaced as that also died. It now has the latest software which greatly reduces the chance of failure but does not prevent it. My friends 5N also went sudden and required recovery which I remember him saying was a pain with two kids and two German shepards in the car.

It’s just one of them things I have accepted and don’t worry about.

A quick ai search brings up this -
Was focusing on the 5N/6N/EV6 GT etc as that's what the question was about and there were changes to our versions which seem to have helped.

Would be good to see where that 25% figure has come from though, I only ever see guestimations with nothing to back them up when people talk about that percentage. There seems to be a lot of confirmation bias from what I can see and it's putting people off as those that are unhappy about having the problem are always the ones that bring it up in every conversation on forums/groups etc  (not aimed at you btw, but I'm sure you can relate to who I'm talking about in various communities :D)

I’ve honestly had no issues with my 5N other than the charging port cover went all warped so had to get replaced which ended up being a load of back and forth due to broken parts, leaking parts then finally a clean order from Korea for the whole unit inside and out in body colour… The most annoying part is the cover seals the port there is no cap on the type 2, lucky for me I’m capable to design and 3D print one or probably would have killed the charging port.

It’s exactly the same iccu nothing has been changed since 2021 when it was introduced only software updates from factory change revision versions. The one in the N or GT is identical to any other egmp platform car.
The problem is it’s too small and stuffed under the rear seat on top of the battery so it overheats it’s just a crap design and Hyundai are winging it until the next gen platform comes out.

The owners clubs on Facebook ran a poll on how many have had issues and it was around %25 said they had iccu issues also there is an American paper showing it higher than that but that includes all egmp cars so not just N and GT models. I cannot find it now but reading through the court cases should tell you if you can be bothered.

The only reason there are less N or GT cases reported is there are far less of them. Saying that my GT has had it replaced so has my friends N.

Absolutely people who have the issue complain more it’s human nature and there is still loads that have had no issues. Me I love the GT and even though I know the potential risks and have experience it I would still buy another. Most cars have issues and this is just the one for these. It now has a 15 year warranty so at least it’s covered if or when it does go pop.

Exactly the same thing happened to my Ioniq 5 the cover goes wonk and then it leaks. Was replaced under warranty. I used the cover from the charge cable in the car whilst waiting for it to arrive.

Test drove the EX60 at the weekend. Lovely car, about the right size for a family of 4 now that we are getting away from a pram. Really nice inside and the single screen wasn't too bad.

Volvo have really got the ride down perfectly for a family cruiser, they aren't trying to be too sporty. Loads of space for passengers and pano roof comes as default even on the base spec.

Going to try the GLC electric this week to compare. I've ruled out the iX3 because I didn't like the interior or the steering wheel.

Fitted a hat to my Ohme might last a bit longer or not. Lol

That’s hilarious, not gonna lie. I thought you made it from a bucket. Was think more like this.

It is rather silly but does the job of keeping the sun and rain off the charger. These Ohme units seem to fall to bits as the front is just stuck on. My Wife thought it was hilarious when she noticed it.

That's why I'm asking for the evidence though, every thread I've seen where people are saying it's 20%+ people are saying it's in court cases etc but can never point to the evidence. It's like there's some magical statistics that everyone is quoting yet no one can point to them :(

With regards to the poll, was that specific to the 5N/6N/GT? I've had a look through but can't find it. Could you drop us a link?

I linked to the court cases above. If you google there are quite a few especially in the US. The Ioniq guy did a big thing about it last year. No idea how to find other than looking at the Ioniq 5 owners club or EV6 owners club most was last year so will need searching. I don’t have time to search through members clubs and groups to find evidence if you want the info it’s there to find.

It’s not specific to the 5N, 6N or GT models as every EGMP based car uses the same ICCU unit, N, GT, Ioniq 5, EV6, base model or N or GT it’s the same unit.

Hyundai have ignored the issue failed to respond to lawsuits and then out the blue extended the ICCU warranty to 15 years take from that what you will. It’s a much bigger issue than they want to admit as it affects thousands of cars with no permanent fix. They have not redesigned the ICCU it’s the same unit fitted since 2021 with various software updates.

Even a quick AI search shows this.

Has Kia solved the ICCU problem?

No, Kia and its parent company Hyundai have not completely solved the root hardware design flaws causing Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failures, though they have rolled out extensive software updates and extended warranties.

This chap had a brand new ioniq 5 N he has not even driven yet ICCU failure 3 month lead time on part.

I agree with everything you’ve said, but the moment someone says this it destroys any credibility in an argument IMO.

AI is so often wrong that I don’t use it for research in any capacity, as I don’t have any trust in what it says.

I think you positioned your point really well without it :-)

Here is a consumer reports feature stating the failure rate is between 2-10% and the issue is ongoing even in new cars. All other cars it’s 1% or less. At 10% you are looking at hundreds of thousands of vehicles requiring ICCU replacement covering all EGMP platform cars.
that's cray cray, hyundai have sold >1 mil EGMP platform cars up to 2025..so probably 1.2-1.3mil by now?
even at 5% failure rate that's 60,000 cars (assuming 1.2mil sold)

if i was told the car i was going to buy had a 5% failure rate i'd walk on by...

Not saying the ICCU isn’t a problem, it clearly is, that’s why there’s recalls and software updates, lawsuits (specifically listing pre 2025 cars) and a 15 year warranty extension on older cars (again not later cars, due to their apparent changes and this is across Kia, Hyundai and Genesis)

The articles you’ve linked and the actual complaint references the consumer report failure rate of 2-10% which in itself is a wide range but a way off the 25% being claimed. You can see it at the bottom of page 9, it also covers cars up to mid 2024 (even though it was filed in April 2026).

Maybe you should ask your favourite AI/LLM for the evidence of the 25% failure rate and see what it says :)

So coming back to my original post, yes there are still EV6 GT/5N/GV60 magma failures, but take everything being claimed on owners groups with a pinch of salt as things are changing over time and so far there’s no evidence of what’s being stated (at scale). I’m sure in a few years some more stats will be provided at scale rather than an echo chamber of unhappy owners on Facebook.

It’s also worth noting that the consumer report relates to the earlier models where warranty etc has been extended.

the new replies didn’t refresh on my screen but mentioned it above. It’s also interesting they say it’s between, so could be at 2% but still quite a way from the 25% scaremongering that’s happening

I was stating what pols on owners sites was showing you could find these if you wanted. When you looked at those who stated issues and those who did not it was around 25% reported failures or issues.

Even 2-10% is a huge number of cars across all EGMP platforms this does not include multiple failures it’s not scaremongering it’s facts they fail a lot and sometimes multiple times. Hyundai still claim it’s less than 1% ?

Oh and the new so called fixed 2026 ICCU if you call a slightly bigger fuse and a higher thermal tolerance a fix then excellent. Unfortunately they are still failing even 2026 units but far less cars produced in 2026 means not as many failures but still far higher than rivals like Tesla or Polestar who have well under 1% failure rates. Plenty of reports of 2026 Ioniq 5 suffering ICCU failure if you search. Oh and lots of 2026 cars are still be fitted with the older pre 2026 ICCU as well.

I drive an EGMP car my previous car was one (Both had ICCU replaced) and my next car will likely be one my Wife is getting one soon. I think they are great even with these issues but I’m more than happy to say that Hyundai have a big issue with its ICCU that has caused thousands to be inconvenienced and is still an issue even on current models.

You state EV6 GT, Ioniq 5 N & GV60 and yes these will have a lower failure rate as far far fewer are produced of the top end performance models. The EV6 GT is no longer available in the US due to Trumps tariffs so they will be lower than comparing all EGMP cars which still all use the same ICCU. There is no special ICCU for the performance models.

You say I’m scaremongering but you are the opposite if you search ICCU failure you get thousands of results from all kinds of sources. You seem well mines ok so it must be wrong. Thousands of cars needing ICCU work is damn scary tbh that’s a lot of spares needing produced shows why some are waiting months for a replacement with a dead unusable car.

Anyway let’s just enjoy our EGMP cars before our ICCU’s go pop. :D
