EV general discussion

Wife’s Corsa went for a recall today and our Vauxhall dealer has now also become a BYD dealer. Whilst waiting I had a look at a Sealion 7 in the showroom tbh it was very nice felt solid and seemed well built. Have never really looked at BYD before but I was quite impressed. Not enough to trade my KIA though. lol
That dealer is only round the corner from me so I wander past it quite often, I've so far resisted going in to see what the BYDs are like though because I know it'll just end up in me man mathing a way into something I don't need

Greenhous I have been going there for years it’s had quite the upgrade from when it was just a Vauxhall dealer. I remember taking my mk2 GTE there for a service many years ago when they first moved to the current location. They have always been good to us over the years.

I don't get this really. Why do people do it in the car? I guess people don't care and they can do whatever they want in their car, but it just ruins the car for the next person if they decide to sell it in the future.
ZFG in a leased car owned by someone else. Also smokers are nose blind to the stink.

Whenever I see someone hot boxing a cigarette in a nice car I think to myself how they're completely ruining it.

Should be disclosed whether the car that you're looking to buy was previously owned by a smoker, etc., but then again, it should be fairly obvious when you look/smell inside.

I'd never buy a smoker's car. It's evident that such a car is unlikely to have been looked after well, considering they couldn't give two ***** about maintaining a clean interior.

Yep, have had a few occasions I specifically asked if a used car had a smokers smell before test drives, to be told “all our used cars are fully valeted before hand over”. Only to get there and find a stale smell of tobacco and magic tree air freshener.

I think nowadays it will be vape smell. Interior of car covered in some god awful flavour of glycerin.

Edit: I think I’d probably prefer tobacco over vape TBH.

It’s the tar in tobacco that’s the major problem as it gets embedded into the headlining and upholstery (even leather) and is a “hoor” to get out :)

Vape odour will not be anywhere near as bad to remove thankfully.

I would still personally walk away from a vapour used car as well though.

We used to smoke in our car in our twenties. We also used to smoke at home indoors. Then the smoking ban came in to effect and slowly things started changing, and when we eventually moved house and took some pictures off the walls and saw the difference, we stopped immediately.

It's absolutely ******* disgusting. Ewww.

The latest is that new cars will only pay it from their first mot( typically after 3 years)

Source? I can't find anything about this, and that seems utterly batpoop crazy even for a government decision.

If you can afford to buy a new EV you already potentially get over 100k worth of miles subsidised from the grant, giving a further 3 years worth free is insanity.

Meanwhile used buyers get shafted with no grant, no free miles, and have to pay more than for a suitable ICE

Those with newer cars will also be required to submit and pay for their annual mileage, but this will only be checked at the first MoT test, when the vehicle reaches three years old – annual mileage checks will not be required, unless fraud is suspected – with any discrepancies reconciled then.

A few articles popped up around July saying the same thing, but it's all still unconfirmed apart from the fact it's coming AFAIK.

That says the mileage wont be checked until the first MOT - they will still have to pay for it however

What happens if you sell before the first MOT?

What an absolute potential mess this can be

nvm: looks like you submit them annually when you apply for eVED

The same thing as would happen if you sell at any point between MOTs surely? The buyer and seller both sign a receipt with the mileage at point of sale - seller is responsible for mileage up to that, the buyer for anything after.

Edit: Not saying I agree with the scheme, I think it's an absolute farce, but practical "problems" like that are relatively easy to solve. My main issue with it is the big **** you to everyone who historically paid more for an EV based on low running costs, just like VED.

If they

A): Only applied it to cars registered after a certain date after it was announced
B): Applied it across the board to all vehicles regardless of fuel type
C): Get rid of the grant which gives 100k "free miles" to more wealthy buyers who can already afford a new car anyway

Then I'd have no problem with it at all.

I might be wrong, I thought i was once but I was incorrect :D, I may have misread it as not needing to pay where it could be you just estimate until the first mot.
  • New cars get a break: cars under three years old (four in Northern Ireland, until their first MOT) won't need annual mileage checks.
