EV general discussion

Yet to encounter these burdens personally, just the benefit of a significant amount of additional flexibility and getting an extremely favourable mileage payment despite managing most of the related mileage on electric :p

Fair enough - if gaming the system is working then fill your boots :)

For everyone else - I imagine the moment the short electric range has gone and the petrol engine kicks in the thoughts are ‘if only we had more electric range’ :p
With the fastest EV public charging now being cheaper than filling up with fuel, it’s even less of reason to go hybrid for those rare, multi hundred mile immediate trips

I'd be thinking oooh lovely 6cyl petrol engine noises.

I'd be imagining not having to unhitch whatever I'm towing, and being able to fill up in a matter of minutes. And I wouldn't have to worry about whatever campsite I'm going to has a charger.

Oh yes- the towing a house around the country scenario. That’s definitely a choice for sure.

Hybrid V6’s must be slim pickings?

Plus towing a racecar, lets not forget the race car. :p you can do all these things with a tow hook and more when you have a suitable fuelling source. I've not been to many venues (hillclimbs and sprints) with a 7kw charging near by never mind 350w+

Though I do think I might be OK with an EX60 or the big beemer to many venues and even managing the return without charging but it's a risk, petrol/petrol stations make this easy and just works.

It was already mentioned a few posts before yours.

Inline 6 - RRS or X5 is what we're looking at. Enough battery range for most of the mileage (school run, shops etc), huge towing capacity, and genuine cross Europe ability if required.

Of course, although a lot of EVs can manage the weight of a trailer and light enough track/race car, but again you still have the charging/range issues.

Yeah, though as the 'short' range for me is 60-75 miles (season dependent), this is enough for a fair bit of EV mileage without needing the ICE and then long distance has the flexibility to choose whether recharging or petrol is most sensible - until very recently it was typically cheaper to run the ICE than to charge publicly.

We've got a 2019 Mazda CX5 and are seriously considering moving to an EV. The Mrs prefers the higher driving position of a crossover / suv and so things such as the Model 3 are not really an option.
Our CX5 we've had valued by WBAC at £10k and we can put another £20k in.

Considering the following:
Tesla Model Y - I struggle with this because of Mr Musk. I also struggle with the lack of an instrument binnacle. I do like the Supercharger network though.
Kia EV6 - I like the look of them and they seem to have a good rep
Ford Mustang Mach-E GT - I like the idea of having a sticker that says "My other Mustang is a real one". They seem OK to drive and have plenty of kit. Interior is a bit mental though.
Ford Explorer - I like this one a lot. Not that many of them around though

I'm leaning towards the Model Y long range AWD simply due to the sheer number of them that's available in my price range. People that have them seem to really like them too.

Anything else I should be looking at? BMW iX? Volvo EX40? Merc EQC?
I'd like to stay away from VAG products if possible. I've never had a good experience with any car from them and everyone I know who has owned ID4, Skoda Eniaq, Audi Q etc has had loads of issues.

Had two EQC’s - I’m a fan of the early 20’s MB interior design philosophy and it works fine although a bit of a tank. It’s their first EV so the drivetrain isn’t the best and will struggle to get 3 mpkwh at motorway speeds but there’s plenty of models for all budgets as it’s been out so long.

Adaptive cruise is not standard on any model and you have to search for the symbol on the steering wheel but on the plus side they only model they ever did is 400bhp and it absolutely shifts!

That's really annoying as it looks like almost no one optioned it then as I can't see any in my price range on autotrader with it. That's a non-starter then as it's a must-have piece of equipment.

It is incredibly rare unfortunately. Doesn’t help if the seller doesn’t take a decent photo of the steering wheel as it’s the only way to know.

Just in case, this is what it looks like:

Yeah, already looked that up. Thanks for the heads up about that as it's not something I would have thought was optional on such an expensive car.

It was mildly easier on the Polestar - it came as park of the Pilot Pack and that was easy to tell as it also came with front fog lights.

The steering wheel was the same on all trims and had the button for it even if it wasn’t fitted

Pretty much any BMW or Audi from the same era is similar (driving assistant professional, tour pack) in that adaptive cruise was an option, agree it is pretty shoddy. Newer Audi and Merc seem to have it as standard but BMW are keeping on with the bare bones

the ford explorer has the nice VAG 550 drivetrain - they seem to be suv bargains 2nd hand/dealer miles - don't know how much s/w they inherited too;
that and capri stand out for (not-ugly too) rarity on Cambs roads

If you can get your head round Elon musk, and you are buying your car outright and TBF even if you're not...it's a couple hundred quid an hour's work to fit a driver's display that integrates fully with the car and does not look out of place at all. The display is also removable without damaging the car should you choose to sell the car in future without the display.

Here's mine:

Oooh, that looks good. Yes, I'd be buying outright. Tell me more about that display.
