EV general discussion

No one is saying people who are in the market for a BMW M2 are also looking at an Xpower. It was just a demonstration of the Xpower's raw acceleration.

Yeah but we know this though, and have done for a very, very very long time. Instant torque is literally one of the defining core features of electric motors, this fact is as old as the electric motor itself.

What an odd discussion.

Having actually owned a X Power it is fine but outside of its launch power (and specifically only its launch power, rolling it was somewhat .... eh considering the power output) its a MG4 which is to say, decent if uninspiring. Critical problem for the X power is the vibration at between 65 and 70MPH which make it feel like the front wheels are unbalanced. MG were completely uninterested (at the time, no idea if they have bothered to fix / to anything about it) in sorting it so got rid of the car. The infotainment in the early models was terrible but this looks to be one of the major things (along with interior perceived quality) which they have improved with the facelift. The MG4 itself is fine, especially the facelift at the prices you can get them.

The e208GTI (or Corsa GSI / VXR whatever they are calling it) is not my cup of tea at all although I can get the appeal.

Recently tested the full range on our Model 3 SR+ (with tested 88% battery capacity remaining) and it quite happily did 172 miles from home to Aberystwyth (Home > M5 > M4 > A449 > Stop in Abergavenny > A470 + Diversion > A44 > Aberystwyth) with 25% remaining. Charged back up to 95% for a onward leg to New Quay (very meh but useful in the context of why we visited) and then on home via the M4 with a single stop in Swansea / Moto Services for a very quick top up. Could have made it home based on the car estimation (which from experience can be trusted), but the miles past Port Talbot in the Average 50 zone with a truck basically in the boot meant I needed to stop to calm my nerves (why do trucks do this?!).

Not a bad little jaunt overall :)

Your definition of fun is very different to mine

Useful how?

If you are in the wrong lane at the traffic lights. If you are at the traffic lights and two lanes merge into one. If there is a boy racer in a Nissan Leaf thinking they are going to dust you at the lights. That sort of thing.

What an odd discussion.

The point was that this car that can be had for less than £20K nearly new, can easily beat a performance car that cost way more. A feat that the e208 GTI that costs £35K new theoretically would probably not beat. That is the point.

They've dialled down the 0-60 power on the new Model 3 RWD, but from 30 it's still very fast, so I have to hold back a bit and get a rolling start if I'm next to a particularly fast car at the traffic lights. Very un-EV like! Doesn't happen very often though... :p 30 to 70 doesn't feel far off the AWD cars, it's quite an unusual power delivery situation.

I've been contemplating an EV for the new family car and right now the man maths makes sense but I can't help but feel that in the not too distant future, when all that lovely fuel duty money starts disappearing, there will be little point.

Surely they'll start taxing on electricity used for car charging or shafting us some other way and with those costs + road tax + the general inconvenience of an EV, it means you're probably better off sticking with an ICE if you already have one?

Jeez what's wrong with letting another car go first.

This constant desire to be 'right' on an online forum, first off the line at the lights, must be first tothe merge... just so tiring living your life like this. Who cares if the Leaf dusts you at the lights jeez. How fragile is your ego

Nothing actually useful or necessary then

In one very specific thing..,....
It's like stating that my Mustang is more of a luxury car than my mate's BMW 7-series because I have cooled seats and he doesn't.

Yes. In one very specific thing. Again I am not saying people would be comparing those two cars to buy one of them. It was simply a demonstration of the Xpowers raw acceleration which I think (can't prove) the e208 GTI would not be able to beat.

Dear lord. I was asked for scenarios where having such acceleration would be beneficial. I give such scenarios and am then immediately attacked again. The Leaf thing was a joke....

Yeah nothing is useful. Why do we even bother with performance cars when we have the Citreon Ami? Why even bother with cars at all when we have bicycles? Why bother with bicycles when we can walk?

You guys have lost the plot.

This whole thing was started when someone asked if anyone would be interested in the new e308 GTI and I said I would rather have an almost new Xpower for £15K cheaper. Ever since it has been attack attack attack.

Come on @lovelyhead, it's time to accept your car and it's bigger more powerful brother are just crap and the e-208 GTI ****** all over them, as demonstrated by the fact an M2 would be faster on track.

I think I have no choice but to take my car to the scrappies now and get down to my local Peugeot dealership immediately as I am clearly an idiot.

Nobody is saying this though are they. Hardly anyone actually on here wants an e-208 GTI.

Why don't we ease off the hyperbole for a sec

So you envisage EV's getting more expensive to run but not ICE cars?

Also what inconvenience?

Hmmm, think about the total cost of ownership, lets say you are coming up to a change because of a PCP or leasing ending or your car is 20 years old.

Sure you can assume electricity will eventually cost the same as petrol, but any EV should deliver lower running costs (servicing and maybe tyres/brakes depending on how you drive)

So, if you are coming to a NATURAL change point (1) enjoy cheap electric for a few years (2) lower running costs

And don't forgot unlike petrol you can make your own electricity at home!

Nobody is saying this though are they.

Exactly, everybody seemed to entirely ignore the fact that the original point was about the MG vs the 208 and honed in on the examples used to show what the MG was good at to make sure lovelyhead knew it definitely wasn't good and he was very mistaken to use other vehicles to make some simple comparisons.

Perhaps if people had responded with some relevant points about why the 208 itself was better rather than why the MG was crap, then the entire discussion wouldn't have gone on such a weird tangent.
