EV general discussion

Requested a test drive of a Leapmotor B10 and a Changan Deepal S05 that I’m considering getting on the Octopus salary sacrifice scheme that my workplace offers. Name aside, the reviews I’ve seen so far of the Changan seem really good, and it looks like a lot of car for the money.

Saw one in a car park the other day (Changan). Looks quite nice from the outside actually. Sometimes seeing the rate if progress I do wonder how we can avoid all driving around in Chinese cars in 10 years time lol

In my news feed today, not that I read the Telegraph but I think the headline is fairly self explanatory.

Would it not be loads cheaper and faster to just get a local electrician to fit it?
Maybe. But it's still going to be £250+ to have a sparky do it and the charger itself is like £600 so I'd only be saving a few hundred. Based on the experience my mate had with a local electrician when he has his charger installed, I figured it was best to go with someone who does it all the time.

Charger install booked for 5th November. Easy to remember that date although there better not be any fireworks caused by it.
Have a look at where your fuse box is, where you'd like the charger and the cable routes you'd want, the installer will try to take the path of least resistance as they're on a fixed fee, so worth having an idea yourself (i.e. they'd rather drill through a wall than go around it, which may not be your preference).

My main meter is on the front of the house and I want the charger literally 10cm from it on the same wall. Super easy.
i know you're getting your hypervolt from octopus, it's probably the easiest/straightforward way to get it, but i'd hazard a guess it's not the cheapest
if your install is so easy, might be worth having a look to see if there are any other installers who would be able to do it for cheaper?

In my experience the local guys price themselves very similar to the likes of Octopus at least for a straight forward install, they don't get the volume discount on materials that octopus can but they can generally get to you much quicker so to most people it's worth paying effectively the same cost but getting it in 5 days rather than 3 weeks.

They also don't mess about asking for random copies of deeds to check the 2 parking spaces in front of your house where the front garden would have been otherwise are actually yours or worry about people possibly falling over the cable going the 1m from the wall of the house to said parking spaces :o

On the other hand, given my recent experience, a local electrician might not give the same after sales service that a specialist company might provide and quickly do a disappearing act if there are any issues. The company I used, Smart Home Charge, were very good with an issue I had with my charger and very quickly resolved it. They also use local installers to the area of where you live.

Same here, I had a podpoint charger that developed a fault outside warranty. They had a guy call out and he offered me either a replacement for £200, or an upgraded smart charger that would work off my solar for a lot less than I was being quoted for a “new” install.

for hypervolt you can buy the charger directly from their website and they will engage an "authorised" installer to do the installation and it'll be warrantied by hypervolt themselves iirc

Good news for drivers along the 303 in Somerset and it looks like Tesla will be putting in new Super charger sites in Ilminster and Wincanton in the future (sadly no idea on date from the article):

(Well if Somerset Council approve the application...).

Will be good as the 303 is sorely lacking chargers in this area, at least at volumes greater than 1..

I'm probably going to have to use Superchargers this weekend as I'm picking the Tesla up tomorrow, then I need to drive to Oxford and back on Saturday morning, then Cardiff and back on Saturday evening, followed by Oxford on Sunday morning then on to Hayling Island later in the day. Probably around 500 miles all in with only a granny charger at home.
It should be a good demonstration to the wife that an EV is fine for long trips.

Honestly there really are chargers everywhere these days, and it just takes a quick look on Zapmap or ABRP around areas where you know you’ll either need to charge or you’ll be having a break and can do a ‘splash and dash’ and you’ll be fine.

So my wife has pretty much been given a charging bay at work just for herself now, awesome. Free leccy.

What am I looking at here? I'm guessing a povvo charger barely quicker than a granny lead?
