EVE still worth it if newbie

i really do think that EVE's complexity is one of its strongpoints (after all, in MMO's and PC gaming generally we need to keep and champion the few examples of engaging and intricate gameplay)-- but i also think it's 'depth' is vastly and often over-stated by its community. a lot of the complicated gameplay elements about EVE are there for no reason... and the 'learning curve' is as much a criticism of the poorly-integrated tutorial/newbie experience as it is an accolade to the game's impressive skill requirement.

Its a good game and is friendly to newbies especially if you get into a good crowd. I was helped a lot as a newbie experianced players give your their cast offs to you its a fortune to them its pennies.

I dont play anymore as I just dont have the time.

I'd say the learning curve isn't as steep as people like to make out.

To answer part of the OP's original question "... is it worth playing as a newbie or will i get hammered all the time?", if you stay in empire space then as a newbie you won't get hammered at all because you you won't own anything that makes ganking you worthwhile at the start. :)

By the time you do look like a nice juicy target you should have a fair idea of what you're doing and be able to hold your own a bit better.

Many decent corps will provide newbies with free T1 frigates and cruisers for PvPing in. Especially if you show you're willing to chip in and help the corp, a 0.0 corp is always needing people in empire to haul jump fuel and stront to their various logistics bases.

With a bit of practice and skill a T1 frigate can be a lot of fun.

Eve is the best MMO I've played but it can be very cruel. The learning curve is massive and there are hordes of ******** that will screw you without blinking. PvP used to give me the shakes because of it's intensity, imagine playing a key role in a fleet battle involving hundreds of players. Simply incredible.
It soaks up time like sponge and since my first child was born a year ago I've had to give it up.

Tip: If you see 0utbreak ........ Run!

I've tried Eve several times, as I loved the X3 series of games but could never get into it. I think It was how turned off I was by the controls - I wanted to actually pilot my ship not just click on things. Personally for I loved the concept, but the realisation of it wasn't for me.

maybe if anyone interested in starting EvE or already recently has, posted here with their in game name and what theyd like to do (if they know) we could get some momentum ??

I remember saving for about 6weeks, believe it or not for a Maller (Cruiser). Had a fly about with a couple of in game friends, out of nowhere a few low powered frigates (3) appeared(just after my mates went through the jump gate)... Gone in under a minute, I remember floating around in space swearing my head of. That's the sort of experience I got from Eve(good ones too), WoW cannot match it.

Brilliant community, the forums were great too with developers on them quite a bit.

So pleased this game did well, it deserved to.

Anyway, I left after opening a support ticket about not getting money for a large amount of scordite I deposited. The best support ticket I ever did create...

Instead of giving me the amount I was owed, I got zillions of isk, more then I could spend. I bought a mate a top end battleship(he lost the one he bought 3days earlier after getting ganked, he saved up for it for literally months) with a few expensive blueprints etc. before selling the isk on ebay for £100 or something, god knows how much I'd get now....

Getting that much isk really spoilt it for me strangely, as ALL the challenge went out of the game, it would be different if I had earnt it properly though...

Oh how I miss my Megathon...

Selling/Buying ISK nowadays almost always ends up with the accounts in question put into negative amounts of ISK, obviously private sale more likely to get away with it but not really worth the risk if you want to play the game.

The game still has the risk/reward/effort/reward aspect but its a bit more streamlined nowadays - easier with a little effort to get into OK ships, but still hard to get the top end stuff without more effort - the game is unique in that within reason what you get out of it is only limited by the effort you put in.

I had 63 billion at one point (late 2006), never really thought about cashing it in for real money but it was probably worth quite a bit back then.

Can't recall how much I had, I just recall that I couldn't spend it all unless I acted like a retard.

It was almost like a "Brewster's Millions"(look it up in imdb if interested) situation, as I thought CCP would be onto me at some stage.

The game requires so much grind and time spent playing to get anywhere, and it has fees.

What a perfect money grabbing idea it is :p

I'd definitely play it if it didnt have fees though.

I won an Astarte BPO in the old BPO lottery, didn't require a great deal of effort :)
