Ever come close to walking out of work?

Blimey, I've wanted to stick two fingers up to my boss many times; now I just go and sit in the office for 5 mins, grab a coffee or something, and chill.

After having been promoted from the shop floor, I sympathise with my fellow management peers, as being the boss is more stressful than I think my colleagues realise! However, I'm a massive believer in "setting the example", so I get myself off to the office, excusing myself for 5 mins, and get my temper back down to sensible levels. I'll be the first to admit, this isn't something people think of doing in the heat of the moment, and it took a lot of hard work and patience to manage my frustrations (or at least appear to! ;)); I've also found that I've been able to help a lot of my colleagues who suffer anger management issues. Quite rewarding! :)

I went for the dramatic "i quit"

My bosses boss was a petty bully both in public and private. I spent a week in the London office after being one days notice, I wasn't happy but I just got on with it without saying anything.

Anyway during my time there I was asked to move a big Xerox multifunction printer/fax/scanner I agreed but when I realised that I didn't have long enough patch cables I said that it wouldn't be possible today because of the shortage of cable. The director and me agreed that he would get one of his staff to plug the patch lead in when it arrived and for now it was OK to leave the printer where it was so the office could function. This was a Friday and I was due to go back to Crewe that night.

Monday comes and I'm back at work and I get called into my line managers bosses office. He asks why I haven't moved the printer as asked, I explained the above and that he had been agreed with the director at site and thought that would be that.

The next thing I know is I am being asked to go to London that day to move the printer and re patch it, I said that it was a waste of time and that as agreed a staff member there would plug the patch lead into the wall socket.

This wasn't good enough and in no uncertain terms was told I was going to London, at this point I asked for my boss to be called in and that request was refused.

At this point I walked out to get my line manager so he could join in the debate, when he heard what had been agreed with the London office he was happy and didn't see any issue.

This was still not good enough and again I was told I was going to have to go to London that day to patch the printer in, I refused and to be fair my line manager agreed that it was a waste of time.

My line manager asked me to leave the room so he could sort it out, 10 minutes later I'm called back in and to the astonishment of me and my lime manager I am told that I am going to London to plug the cable in.

I refuse under any circumstances to go to London to plug in one cable at which point the whole situation turns into farce and I walk out and sit at my desk.

Next thing I am getting screamed at in an open plan office and told to get back into office, I stand up and tell him I am not prepared to be spoken to like that and sit back down, next thing he is in my face yelling at me to get back in his office, I just started to laugh at him now, I had made my mind up to quit by this point and stood up and started to pack my bag.

A big debate ensues about what I am doing and I tell him I am going at which point he threatens to suspend me. I point out that when i say going, I mean going for good, cease my employment, bye Au revoir.

Bear in mind this is an open plan office and everyone is stunned that this is being played out in full view, I start to walk out and he yell "Where the **** are you going" I tell him again that I have had enough and that his earlier decision to send me to London is ridiculous, until this point i had been firm but well mannered and fair.

I start to walk of again and he was being me very close say again "Where the **** are you going" now threatening me with the sack of all things. He now throws an insult at me, personal and direct.

The whole situation culminates with me saying I may be a "fat ****" but I don't spend the day looking at particular type of porn and please don't deny it because we have the proxy logs.

At that pint my employment ceased.

Well, it's up to you at the end of the day. But you should consider how it would look on future references, and also why can't you use this 'opportunity' to better yourself and make yourself look good at work? I agree with the training aspects of it, but these things happen in all jobs. It's up to you if you want to be rebellious and cry or grasp this 'opportunity' to improve your skills. Also, working above your level is a good thing to have on a CV for when you leave your job.

Just my thoughs mate, at the end of the day it's up to you.

Paul

I understand the whole 'opportunity' thing, I've been with the company for nearly 7 years, I regurarly do things out of my current role for the company; sometimes in my own time and cost. I'm one of the most multi skilled members of staff and more than capable of working to the above level and supporting this new project. But having said that there is times where the company is just taking the mick (and I belive this is one of the times), its no longer a point of proving yourself or a reasonable management request; when they tell you that your job role changes forever to the next grade up and not pay you for it.

I applied for four jobs today

Just as I post this - let another support for project I never heard of calls up!!!

I'm with you there; lucky theres a chain of command in place at our work; if any manager thats not my own tries to be-littles or tells me off; I would ask them who they are? as their have no rights to as there not my manager.

The managers are quite well 'manager like' at our place, they wont even try to tell us of in front of other members of staff; most likely because they know; I will escalate it there manager as them being unprofessional. - God this does make me sound like a trouble maker - but belive me I'm not.

The guy opposite makes me want to walk out a fair bit. Small office, small company. We're currently contracted on some mod work, and he phones home regularly to talk to his wife who is sick at home. All well and good, but he starts ******* praying down the phone, and I can hear it all. Makes my skin crawl. Worse, he has a really camp Californian accent which irritates me beyond belief.

"I love you too sweetie," and "hallelujah" and so on so forth every five minutes, for at least 15 minutes a day..

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!112onon123n123

I work weekends in a small shop and come every sunday when im in charge i always expect to be disappointed. In the last 2months ive worked 4 or 5 sundays with no breaks, i work a 8hour shift and to not eat for 8hours and constantly be standing and moving kills me, but i dont mind, its just the excuses the staff come up with such as;

*Ive been in a motorbike accident (2 days later they walk in, not one bruise, scrape, cut etc)
* Ive been bottled (which later turned into being drugged and bottled.... later found out they were just "too tired" to come in)
*My kitchen has flooded
*Been Jumped (happened to the same person twice in 2 weeks now)
*I twist my ankle poledancing last night (Yes... we had a poledancer work pt for us and YES she was as useful as an inflatable dart board)

Makes me want to either quit or exercise my right to refuse to work sundays.

update!

So are you still going to walk out? Or have all your gripes been satisfied?

/millitant head on
Unless you and a large proportion (all or very near to) of your department are willing to stand together I would suggest you get used to the idea.
Bear in mind that if they get away with doing it once, even if it is only for a short time, they will do it again.......
/Millitant head off
Always bear in mind the terms of your contract, and in particular the amount of time you have been in your position before kicking up fuss.

I want to walk out of my job almost every day now. But if I moved it's just the same old job in a different place so I make the best of it and improve myself. Welcome to IT. It doesn't get any better :D

I agree with the sentiment above that management is more stressful than you'd think.

for everyone being asked to do something which is not part of their job.

Get a contract.

If its not in your job description and contract then you dont do it.

If they want you to do it then ask them to put it in your job description so that you can be graded properly. After all why should you be doing work you arent paid for or qualified for?

Its all very well for someone to say it will help job prospects and look good on your cv. And thats fine - i would do the extra work as a favour or a one off but not as continuous regular work.

If they force you to do it (ie threaten you with the sack either directly or subtly) then get it all in writing. You should be able to claim unfair dismissal.

Its a disgrace. But typical of some managers who dont give a damn about their workers all they are concerned with is the work and it getting done by fair means or foul.....

YES I HAVE (raises hand)

I walked out about a year ago (we had about 6 managers in 4 years)
this one was a right dipstick!!
one morning he came in and just let rip AT ME swear word after swear word, so i walked out, phoned head office and wrote a letter
i then found out he was suspended from his last post for this behaviour and they dumped him in here!
