Ever complained and received complimentary freebies?

Sainsbury's did great for me.

I asked for £20 cashback. Didn't notice that I wasn't given my money at the checkout. Phoned the store told them what I had done they said wait a day till the tills were checked then I would get my money.

All fine so far, however it took them days and days to sort out a little problem.

So my wife drafted a strongle worded letter and sent it off.

Result

I gat my £20 cashback, a £20 voucher from head office and a £10 voucher from the store!

Superb service after all.

Scuzi, nice :) Are you looking for compensation?

DS, I'm disappointed they didn't offer you any compensation, but they said sorry for their mistake, fair enough.

I've just written a harsh complaint to Virgin Media.

An engineer who replaced my modem fitted the new one with a grossly over-powered adapter. It caught fire a few days later. Fortunately I was there to make it safe but I was livid thinking about if I had gone down the shops or something.

Reckon they'll give me a free upgrade to 20mb?

I reckon you want more than that. ;) "Due to the gross incompetence of your engineer, it was sheer luck you didn't kill myself and my family. The consequences of this could have been horrific, it could have been fatal. I trust you will ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else and I would respectfully suggest you make a large gesture of goodwill to compensate me. I will not be paying for your service for this month, if you value my custom, you will upgrade me to the highest package you can, and I won't be paying for it for 5 months. Otherwise, I will consider the other options I have at my disposal. Please excuse the combative tone of this letter, however your company's stupidity could have cost me not only my home, but my life, I am feeling understandably aggrieved."

Donimos - forgot our drinks and delivered next day, store mgr phoned me and offered me £20 credit for the next time i order

McD - Screwed my order up 4 times (Mc Sandwich no lettuce  ) got £20

Argos - Wrong/replacement printer sent when was promised an original (mp130 vs 150 iirc) got £20 cheque, £10 petrol coupon and £30 argos coupons

Tesco - Diet cans OOD (only by 3 days) got £10 free shopping

o2 - Screwing me over with a DD 2 free months

theres lots more too.

also been banned from ALL P4U stores for telling them what i'd do if they phoned me for a 4th time in one day trying to get e to upgrade even though i had been in that morning and was currently in hospital with my giving birth wife i was a little irate

your good at this lol, do you think they would actually do all those things?

Possibly, if not, at least it's a good starting point and, while there's a slight risk of sounding like a money-grabbing git, there's not a whole lot they can do about it because they were in the wrong. It's a calculated risk, price of compensating vs. risk of customer taking things further. If something nearly burns down my house, chance of me taking things to court are high if you don't give me satisfaction. Pistols at dawn or small claims court, whatever! ;) If they decline the offer of settling things amicably, write to the most senior person in the company you can find. Richad Branson probably won't reply personally, but his assistants would most likely more willing to assist if you can demonstrate you've already exhausted the normal channels of complaint.

Funnily enough the last people I complained to were OCUK (serious delivery problems; the goods still hadn't arrived about 5 days after dispatch) and Gibbo refunded the delivery cost straight back to my card. There was me thinking I'd have hell getting the money back from Citylink :D

I never really complain tbh. When I was a kid (about 10) I innocently wrote a thank you letter (one of those kiddie coloured-in drawing ones) to Sony after they sent us some free Playstation demo CDS. I ended up getting a letter back from someone very high up who sent about 10 full-retail games! Was absolutely thrilled :D

A thankyou can brighten up someone's day. If someone goes above and beyond for me, I think it's the least I can do. :D

I found the electrical stores' response rather poor in all honesty :\

Very true, I was at work today morning and a customer came in to our store a few days back as our other store was closed due to the floods and she handed a letter to our store's manager and during our briefing the manager said he was grumbling whilst thinking it was another complaint and to his surprise he found a very polite thank you letter. The letter mentioned how helpful our store and how polite our staff were. The letter is now pinned up whilst you walk up the stairs amongst important news up to the cafe. The manager said he will be sending a reply.

Just goes to show, that your appreciation can go a really long way!

Oh and being rude gets you absolutely nowhere, two customers didn't get very far hurling abuse and threats today. One involved a 60-70 year old guy telling me I was going to regret it cause I couldn't offer him cash as a method of refund  :D

I got an acknowledgement of the complaint letter I sent to Thomson last week (see earlier in the thread). Pre-printed signature though! Meh.

They assure me my complaint will be dealt with in the next 28 days after they complete their investigation.

Any news on their "investigation"? (If they send you a cheque, don't cash it until you're 100% sure you're happy with what they've offered you)

I complained to a sweet manufacturer, after buying a 'lollipop mix' they only had 2 chalk lollies (you know the ones!) in the entire pack, and about 10 of the lollies that no one likes!
To make it worse, the chalk lollies were smaller than usual, and tasted of nothing!

I wrote a letter to them, they sent me a bag full of chalk lollies + a few sample packets of their new sweet range!

Also complained about Pizza places;

Dominos - Ordered, they delivered 1 pizza and not the other, phoned them up, they said they'd send the other one out and never did, but kindly charged us for both still!

Wrote letter and got £10 voucher.

Pizza Hut - Ordered 2 x pizzas, one was the wrong one, and they closed so told the shop (not in a shouting manner) and they gave me a £10 voucher to use next time!

Looking back I feel a little bit harsh to be honest, but i've not blamed any staff member or anything, so hopefully no one got into trouble.

Besides, I still use the above places regularly so the voucher did the trick of making me forgive them :D

that reminds me, cant remember what it was, but something I bought from ocuk was broken, and he refunded the money without even asking me to send it back.. Excellent service I think, cheers Gibbo :)

I complained to Supernoodles after hearing an advert on the radio advertising that they were 'better than sex'. I wrote a letter to disagree to this statement.

They sent me a £5 voucher for Supernoodles, or any other Bachelors product. The next time I went shopping it just so happened to be BOGOF on Supernoodles - so I bought their entire stock, paid 9p and received a very strange look from the checkout girl.

I have a scan on their reply letter somewhere, I'll try and dig it out :D

Does it count if, say, my employers, who i was a customer of, had a promotion to stop people leaving if they were complaining (phone company) and taking line rental/calls elsewhere... and i phoned up and told them an advisor said they would send me a free phone if i kept this one service, which wasn't actually part of the offer.. and got a free cordless phone? lol :D

I suppose this is the appropriate thread to receive a critique on my letter of complain to bmi. Can you all have a read over this and let me know what you think of it?

Thanks :)

did you hear anything from this?

Not yet, sir. I am flying with them on Tuesday and Friday next week so we'll see how that goes.

If I don't hear from them by the 7th August I shall be making a telephone call.
