Ever play a game for the sake of it?

Half life 2. Many peeps rate it as the finest or at least in their top 2.

A friend gave it to me as a gift. Once I found out it had monsters and was set in the future I uninstalled it and considered that "friend" an enemy!

Biggest pile of toss I have ever played.

Looking through my list of completed games, I'd say I forced myself through the following just for the sense of achievement, rather than massive enjoyment from them:

MOH:AA Spearhead/Breakthrough
Halo
Mashed
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
BiA:TRTH30
Battlefront 2
Area 51
Pariah

I also devoted far to much time to Midnight Club 2 and Street Racing Syndicate, neither of which are a patch on the NFS series.

recently played stalker and ut3 to justif the cost
couldnt get into WIC either

in fact most games i buy end up taking back seat to cod4/tf2

i havent played css for AGES but deffo got my monies worth

WoW and Age of Conan, ended up playing WoW for quite a long time after the fun had been worn out just because i had invested so much time and money by that point. It took me a while to realise and cancel my account, wont be doing that again.

Just Cause. I found it brilliant at first but the dodgy driving and repetitive missions got to me fast. I ended up going for the achievements for the simple fact that I was waiting for a job and was absolutely skint. I sucked the life out of everything I owned those couple of weeks.

Airborne seems to be getting a bit like that ,you snipe an enemy or grenade them and a new one keeps spawning up ......pointless

Seems very much a run into the enemy firing hoping for the best ,sort of game .

I still subscribe to and play from time to time, Eve Online, i dont like the game, i cba to do anything new in the game, even though i know there are 100s of potentially fun and interesting paths to try... i just dont really like the game.

I was playing stalker today and completed a few missions.

Few moments after, I was thinking- I don't even want to play this. And realised I was playing it for the sake of it - to kind of justify me buying the game.

Seems a few games recently had me doing this - gta 4 is a biggie.

Had any games which make you feel like this?

Age of Conan, kept on leveling just to tell myself that i actually got something out of it :P

Also the last few levels of Crysis really.

Garry's mod.
Bit lost as in what to make/do...

Age of mythology: titans too...
I loved the original AoM, but the Titans expansion somehow ruined it for me...
And many other games like C&C3, Supreme commander : FA, etcetc... :(.

Only ''really'' play OpenTTD, TF2 and the occasional Trackmania United game...

I play a lot of games just for the sake of it.....thats the point of using 90 day free trials for LoveFilm isnt it?!?!??!:D

I know what you mean about Stalker but it's a very slow burner - too slow for its own good.

I too, was just going through the motions but i stuck with it it and it almost became compulsive playing - it becomes very atmospheric and the story line is one of the best i've come across if you play it until the end. I so very nearly gave up on it but, for once, it was worth plodding on (for me). There are 3 different end sequences too - and 2 are really pretty good, both in plot and gameplay.

It's even made me consider buying the addon - but apparently the game play areas are similar, if not the same in some places, so this is what's putting me off getting it.

I've given up on loads of other games - some really popular ones too:

Halo
Prey
Warcraft 3
Dues Ex
The Sims 2 - i find it hard enough making design decisions for my own house.
LoTR Battle for middle Earth
GTA4
Oblivion
Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds (now that was a real disappointment)
Chronicles of Riddick

They all sit on my shelf with the idea that i may give them a second look - but they'll probably just end up in the loft eventually.

My best surprise was the DoW series - bought the first on a whim and have enjoyed all the follow ons. Great RTS series - but i'm still undecided on DoW II.

Oblivion, hated it, got to the final level then realized i was only playing it to try and find the good in it that others had seen. As i had reached the final level i realized if i hadn't found it by now, i never would.

I actually really enjoyed Doom 3, loads of atmosphere, and I liked the setting.

GTA4 was a biggie for me, I kept at it for hours since it had gotten such high scores everywhere, but finally realised it was boring me to tears.

Looks like we have similar tastes; I agree with both points.

Doom 3 was a cracker of a game - but then it could do no wrong for me as the original Doom series is the reason i started building PC's.

The visuals i still think hold there own - and the atmosphere it generates, if you play with all the lights off and headphones, is fantastic. Solid game physics, a good selection of weapons and old favourites. A totally revamped game and yet it still managed, i think, to keep the essence of the original game.

GTA4 was just too bitty - too many time trials and not enough racing for me. I wish Geoff Crammond would do another Grand Prix Sim, i adored those games - if he's still coding... (Plus i've never managed to get into consoles as i find game pads too much of a compromise - driving sims excluded.)

What wheel do you use Plec? The PS3 works with the G25 and driving force pro/GT so it's still viable as a racing game platform imo.

The Sony developed forumula one game, while two years out of date now, is imo one of the best F1 games ever, especially with a good FFB wheel

I have a god awful microsoft wheel - must be about 4 years old. I stopped using it as it just wasn't responsive enough.

I've just looked at the G25 reviews it makes an impressive case to be bought - but i don't own a PS3. I have an Xbox360 which is covered in dust, not because i don't like the platform - it's like i said, i just haven't got to grips with the game pad as a gaming interface. I bought it for driving sims - but with my slack approach at getting to grips with the gamepad and not being too impressed with the xbox wheel i've kinda given up.

This isn't a dig at consoles - more that my old school control methods are too instilled in my gaming psychi.

Thanks for the suggestions Streeteh, is that Sony F1 game available on other platforms and what's it's title?
