I was flicking through the music channels last night and i was thinking that every band seems to have one album that is either considered their defining moment or step into the big time.

A few examples i thought of:

Metallica - Master of Puppets (defineing moment) or Black album (step into the big time)*
Pearl Jam - Ten
Coldplay - Parachutes
U2 - Joshua Tree (definately the album were they were accepted by mainstream UK)
Nivarna - nevermind

These are all imo of course, any others??

* I know this is two albums :o

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (defining)
Dream Theater - Images and Words (defining)
Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien (or maybe Flying In A Wet Dream).. (big step)

Defining moments work both ways. Lostprophets second album, Start Something was the beginning of their demise. Morning View by Incubus could also be included in this category.

Foo Fighters - The Colour and The Shape

Definitive Foo's. Not that they've ever done a bad album of course.

Behave. Final Straw is better by a country mile. Not heard any albums before that mind.
Songs for Polar Bears is alright, but not as defining as Final Straw.

Muse - Origin of Symmetry
Feeder - Echo Park
The Prodigy - The Fat of the Land

'Born to Run' saved Springsteen's career (the record companies viewed his former two albums as rubbish and were prepared to scrap him, even though both are excellent in my view and contain some of Bruce's best work, especially 'The Wild, Innocent and E Street Shuffle').

But 'Born in the USA' will always be the album that gave him the huge commercial success and mass following.

Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come - one of the defining punk albums of the 90s.

Radiohead - Kid A - their best album definitely.

Bjork - Homogenic - brilliance.

The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium - nothing they've done since has touched this album.

Tool - Aenima - clearly their best album.

Can't be bothered to think of any others at the moment :p

Does Michael Jackson have a defining album?

Madonna - The Immaculate Collection. Some of her most famous tracks.
