EVGA Allegedly Cuts Out Original Developer of Precision Overclocking App

Not sure what you're getting at, Greg. It wasnt unwinder who said they couldnt have implemented his technology without the sourcecode.

Why are people assuming Unwinder owns the code at all? He didn't create Rivatuner, EVGA paid him way before Afterburner even was created and the only thing Unwinder did original was the 64 bit OSD support for all I can find. EVGA did that on their own, and made the mistake of making it look identical to that on Afterburner by possibly reverse engineering Rivatuner since PX 15 doesn't need it, but I don't really see anything stolen or copied at all.

Unwinder wrote rivatuner. EVGA approached Unwinder to supply them with a skinned version with some additional opther features. MSI approached them later for the same, but funded the development of more features (x64) that evga then wanted royalty free. EVGA then bitched and moaned when they didnt get. EVGA then 'rewrote' the backend code and claimed it was 100% in-house yet its basically identical to rivatuner, right down to the IDs assigned to tabs and buttons in the interface etc.. It's all in that thread.

Why are we all suprised a large company has screwed over a small one man band? its been happening since forever and will continue to do so, yeah its pretty damn lame of them to pull a trick like this, but i bet they had their lawyers go over this before doing it to make sure it was watertight, then just ride out the ensuing wave of "WTF's" and profit in the longterm once the dust settles.

What profit though? PX is free. I doubt they are stupid enough to do this on purpose for something that will get them 0 financial gains at best and lose customers at worst.

Ill take MSI AB over Precision anytime, you can do much more with it especially once you use custom configs combined with a .bat file and specific text ie: Hex.
You can take any GPU up to the maximum of 1.6v.

You're confusing Rivatuner with EVGA Precision, Rivatuner (the technology behind EVGA Precision and MSI Afterburner) goes as far as back as the NVidia RIVA TNT days, hence the name....

If they just copy the technology and claim it as their then they don't have to pay Unwinder the development/licensing fees etc.

Genuinely don't care if evga have played dirty on px15, I see it now as competition for afterburner and in turn less for unwinder to focus on. If they're doing 1.3v out of the box then good for them, its something that's a royal pain in the backside to do on afterburner.

Can't believe some people are getting bent out of shape to the point of 'I'm never buying evga again' get a grip.

What they have done is morally wrong by the sounds of it but if Evga were at the right budget for me i would buy with no hesitation. When spending my own money i usually think about No1. It does not mean i condone Evga's actions and Rivatuner was a must for me back in the day so unwinder has my respect in that regard.

Some of the comments in here are truly fantastic, thank you all for a great read.

a few of the best ones in my opinion.

I linked to the forum, so feel free to go look for yourself.

Fancy seeing Greg rushing to Evga's defense....

The only one I would've like to have seen, but really is very unfair like one of those above is.

Fancy seeing humbug rushing to unwinders defense......

Hopefully humbug will appreciate the humour, rather than start argueing. :D

As for the whole story, there is bound to be more to it than what the two sides are saying, probably with both sides in the wrong in one way or another. Unfortunately it is another one of those things that we will never know who was really the worse of the two, as if it goes to court it will be money that decides it.

I have done some digging and have found out what the problem is...GameWorks did it :D

Seriously though, Unwinder does a great job and people like me appreciate what he does. There seems to be a battle between MSI and EVGA on the 64bit department and MSI have 64bit OSD working, whilst PX doesn't. Unwinder has also said that he will continue to work on PX, even though it will be under a different name, so again, that is good for the end user.

I have no idea if EVGA are wrong in doing what they have done and honestly I don't care. I use MSI AB for overclocking and it would be great to get 1.3v off the bat without messing about with files all the time and flashing GPU's, so good work EVGA.

Will this honestly put consumers off buying EVGA products tho? i think not, if they bring out a version of a card with awesome features / speeds etc and priced well, people will buy it regardless of their shady practices in regards to ninjaing code for an app etc.

If it turns out that EVGA have stolen the code then it would put me off up to a point. If I found that EVGA and another company had products with roughly equivalent features, quality and price, then I would go with the other company every single time if this turns out to be true.

However, if EVGA released something that was significantly better than the competition then I would definitely buy it no matter what the result of this dispute turns out to be.

Unwinder might be naturally rude (or simply come across that way in English) but he's no doubt a very talented and committed developer in the PC graphics world, he doesn't have to spend so much time helping users on the Guru3D forums, not to mention Rivatuner has (as far as I'm aware) always been freeware.

He doesn't sound the type to be bothered by the loss of income as money didn't seem to be his motivation but having his 'baby' stolen is probably hurting him more than anything, so shame on EVGA.

I agree but EVGA are usually a fair whack more expensive than everyone else and MSI (who are generally among the cheapest) actually had the decency to pay Unwinder for the improvements he made to Afterburner, so I think I'll be sticking with MSI from now on.
