Well finally got my new P55 kit today, and thought I'd post up some pictures of the new build, and hopefully some comparison benchmarks at the weekend when I've finally found the time to put it all together :)

My current spec is as follows :

Asus P5E X38 mainboard,
Q6600@ 3.4GHz (8x425 1700FSB),
4 x 1Gb of OCZ reaper ram 800MHz (running at 850MHz),
BFG GTX280 OC,
2 x Samsung F1 hdd,
Seasonic M12 700 watt psu.

So the new kit that arrived today is as follows :

EVGA P55 F.T.W mainboard,
Core i5 750 Lynnfield CPU,
4Gb G-Skill Ripjaw DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Memory,
Scythe Ninja 2 rev b CPU heatsink with 120mm fan.

The Scythe comes complete with the correct fittings for the 1156 socket, although it's the push down fitting as oppose to the bracket on the back of the mainboard.

Not too sure what the retail fan is supposed to cool :eek: Your obviously not going to be doing a great deal of overclocking with that!

I've noticed Intel started introducing these extremely thin heatsinks since the 45nm core 2's came out.

You'd think that they would supply something a little more substantial to try and keep heat at a minimum even at stock clocks and voltages.

Power button, reset button, clear cmos switch and BIOS selector dip switch. This board gives you the chance to mess around with three different bios's at the flick of a switch, very handy indeed!

Here's the scythe bracket, the board also comes with LGA 775 holes so you can connect your existing Intel coolers if you so wish.

Not so sure about the clearance between the memory and the fan, would've liked to have been able to put the fan slightly lower really.

Very nice. So, what made you go for the EVGA?

Well I was on the list to receive one of the MSi boards, but they were taking too long to come so I revised my order. Typically the day after I got this OcUK got another batch of the MSi's in :rolleyes:

Will have another update tomorrow, as I'm just re-installing Vista atm.
 
Thanks Big Wayne, The extra eight pin connector is apparently to give you more stable overclocks - 600 watt, not sure why you'd need that much tbh. Especially when you consider the guys that are getting 5.2GHz with Core i5's are only drawing 160 watts. However I won't be using both as I only have one on my psu, my seasonic is a couple of years old now though.

The video below gives a bit more information about the board, however I urge you to flick straight to 1 minute 50, as the first minute or so is unbelievably cringeworthy :eek:

Well It's all running nicely at the moment.

The scythe seems to be doing a pretty good job, running at stock speeds it keeps very cool and also very quiet.

I have initially done just a mild oc to 3.4GHz to compare it with my [email protected].
Ran prime for 5 minutes or so just to see what sort of temps I was getting.

I am now in the process of getting a healthy 4GHz+ overclock, so more results will follow shortly.

It seems to be just too easy getting these 750 chips to 4GHz :cool:

Have set the core voltage to 1.36 volts in the bios, and upped the ram to 1.65 volts, manually set memory timings to spec ie 8-8-8-24.

Turned off C1E state and speedstep everything else left at default.

Again I'm Very impressed with the scythe cooler, seems to keep the cpu at pretty reasonable heat levels.

Off to do some gaming now but will run prime overnight for a proper stability test.



Ok so I now have it up to 4.1GHz and prime stable for 8+ hours , here are the bios settings and prime pics. You'll notice I had to relax the timings on the memory just a tad to get it stable.

Hey coupe69, thanks for sharing the info/pics etc enjoyed reading etc thanks.

Just a couple of questions.

1) Do you get the fan with the actual Scythe Ninja II Rev. B CPU Cooler ?

2) With the fan installed as show in the pics, do you think you could fit 4 sticks of ram in? i.e. could you put 2 sticks in the black slots or does the fan block it, hard to tell if it would or not from the pics.

Yes you get a scythe 120mm fan with it, although it's not pwm. It does run at a constant 1000 rpm which seems to do the job well and still remains very quiet.

You could fit 4 sticks of the ripjaw in without putting the fan too much higher, but I now wish I'd had gone with the Geil 2133Mhz stuff which doesn't have the silly fins on. That way you'd easily fill all 4 banks, with no problems whatsoever.
 
Hey coupe, nice work dude :)

Any chance you could post those bios settings? Especially interested in cpu settings. vcore and vtt seem to be a tough balancing act on this platform.

Which bios version are you using?

Nice board but a bit damn pricey for a "budget" Nehalem system IMO. Are such boards really worth the extra over and above the cheaper models?

After looking around at what everybody on this site seems to be getting, then I think the answer is a resounding no. People seem to be getting to 4GHz as easily on the budget boards such as the Gigabyte UD2 mATX as they are on the more expensive boards. I guess it just depends on what sort of expandability and features you want.

Having said that, this has been by far and away the easiest mainboard to get a good stable overclock that I have ever worked on.

What are the difference in hole centres between s775 and s1156, as looking at the pic the s775 holes are slightly rotated from the s1156 ones, and if you were to turn rotate them square they dont look that far out ? ....

Not a lot of difference really, if you have something like a noctua or a megahalems, you could quite easily twist it so it was square anyway.

EVGA’s got another winner on their hands with the P55 F.T.W. If you’re a hardcore enthusiast looking to push your CPU to its limits, this board will let you do just that.

Nothing wrong with the Intel retail fan. I don`t think the i5 needs that much cooling clocked normally so the fan is quite efficient.Anything more than that stock fan is overkill on a non-overclocked system and most people don`t intend to overclock.

My i5 idles at 21-23deg C with the Intel cooler

Yep very true, the retail fan will be fine for non overclockers, however you have obviously lost your way on the interwebz as this is a forum mainly dedicated to wait for it.......... overclocking :p

There is no way I'd want to be putting some serious voltage through any chip without adequate cooling, and to get to 4GHz+ the retail fan just doesn't cut it :)
 
I was merely trying to explain to DarrenM343 that I thought he was in the wrong forum, in a jovial maybe slightly sarcastic sort of fashion :p I know all about the dangers of ocing on the 1156 platform ;)
 
EVGA P55 F.T.W Win!! AnandTech put some top end P55 boards through their paces.

Final Words

We are going to keep this simple. Hold our feet to the fire and we’ll tell you that of all the boards we tested, the most consistent performer was the $230 EVGA P55 F.T.W SLI E657 (using a Tyco AMP Socket).
At its price point, there’s nothing available on the P55 platform that truly beats it for raw overclocking capabilities
