Exam revision - advice?

Good luck. I get my results from the January exams on Friday.

If I fail any I have to resit in the summer but the max mark is 40% so we can only get a third :s

Yeah same for me, max would be 40% - I'll be happy if I get 50%-59% - I'll be chuffed if I get 60% or more.

More likely it'll be 45-50% though!

Well the exam wasn't so bad afterall.

Someone managed to get hold of a past paper on monday. Only one around.

Guess what? The exam was the same as the past paper, except some of the wording and values had been changed slightly. Same principles and questions!

Unfortunately I didn't get a good long look at it, but remembered a fair few of the answers.

I'm sure I've passed though, so thats all that matters.

lol they always are.

My revision usually consists of past paper for the last 4 years. It's so awesome when you know the textbook answers to questions because you've already seen them.

This past paper was obtained from a 3rd year student, we're all 2nd years. I know what I'll be doing in advance for my following exams. £10 for a past paper please on facebook!

I found it mildly irritating when one lecturer swore blind that the exam for that year would be nothing like the last years and then it was, almost word for word. I wouldn't have minded so much if I'd looked over last years exam properly but after being assured that those questions or similar wouldn't come up I was not impressed.

As for the rest of my lecturers it was a mixed bag, some would make minor alterations while others would rewrite every single year.

they are trying to get you to learn about everything though, whats the use in learning howto pass an exam when you dont actually have the knowledge you should have?

Generally the big problem with exams is you get graded on ability to pass the exam, most of the time its not the true demonstration of applied knowledge it should be.

They should be but if they specifically tell you (as my lecturer did) that the questions will not be repeated then you (I) should be entitled to believe them. As it happens it didn't matter much since I passed comfortably enough but it was more the principle of them giving advice/help that I would have been better off without.

Absolutely, with good exam technique and a basic knowledge of the subject you can do remarkably well. Which doesn't prove the in-depth knowledge that a university education should.

All the way through the last semester we kept moaning because the lecturer wasn't putting much info on vital (website containing lecture notes) for revision but he kept saying his revision pack would contain everything you needed.

To his word he put the revision pack online two weeks before the exam and a large amount of people moaned because they were just examples. I moved from revision of text *yawn* to doing the examples. I always find the past papers help the most (especially for when I done my A levels).

Next day, opened the exam paper to see the exact same questions as from the revision pack. Same figures, everything.

I went from thinking I'd just scrape through 60 in that exam to getting 71. The reason I didn't do even better is because his revision pack answers for the essay questions were bullet points and I didn't concentrate on them. (2 x mathematical questions, 1 essay)

Everyone else who didn't look at the revision pack got high 50's. Just goes to show you should listen to the lecturer, he may be lazy like mine :p

Nice one dude, beats a fail :D I take it your disappointed with your result though. Hopefully this gives you the kick up the **** you need.

Incidentally I got my business result today. Got an A. Whooo!

First exam at uni
Last minute revision (the day before)
Passed (50%)

I consider yourself lucky really.

When you look at it like that then it isn't terrible really, however having re-read the original post I'm slightly surprised that anyone can reach the second year of uni without having sat an exam there until this point.

First exam of the second year ^ ^ It's all been coursework so far this year, (for the first 50% of each module). I've got 5 exams coming up. 2 next week and 3 after easter.
