Excessive physical memory usage

Just running chrome.. Laptop barely has anything on it, done the standard stripping, ran ccleaner, can't figure this out.

It barely has any memory to work with.

With only 1GB to play with it's managing to keep 5MB free which doesn't seem that bad.

Just been handed this laptop from the gf, its old, pink and tiny. Just didn't think 1gb would be soaked up from the off :/

I use 1.8GB RAM on my W8 install without doing anything

1GB isn't much to work with at all.
Although you have more processes running than me.

Completely un-intentionality ignored the processes! Ahhh i had a program on my system a while back that shut down all unnecessary processes but can't for the life of me remember it's name

run ccleaner and close every start up item, will free up some as you have a lot running

It'll take a 2GB stick in place of the 1GB.

Does freeing all of this memory have a purpose? Any memory that isn't in use is basically wasted. Trying to leave free memory in this way harks back to the XP days.

Network printers are the best. To install my printer I just go to add a printer and it is detected over the network.

It works with a basic driver, and just how I like it

Speaks someone that has never tried even the simple task of alt-tabbing between websites on a slow machine with a slow hdd and no free memory. It can literally take minutes with all the writing back and forth to page file.
