Heylo all!

Pickers and I shall soon be looking to move to the wonderful world of Exeter - yay :D! The problem we have is... we know pretty much nothing about the area! :( Booo.

We're looking to buy a property down yonder for around £170k - £180k. Ideally we would love a house with 2 - 3 bedrooms that's hopefully not terraced and in need of a fair bit of work. (Well actually, we would really love a 4 bed house, over looking the sea, with a hot-tub, bar, multimedia room, music studio, garage (x2), massive garden and marble topped kitchen... oh and a jag thrown in too... but beggers can't be choosers! :p )

What areas and roads are popular to live in (including areas way above our budget) and what are definite no go's?! Any recommendations would be great!

Whilst I'm here as well... anyone know of any decent mortgage brokers?

Big big thank you! :)

I don't really know much about housing etc in Exeter, but if you ever need to know anything about the area around Exeter+nearby towns, I can try to help :)

I could get you hooked up with an estate agency if you require. Fulfords. ;)

I've lived here for the past 12 years or so. I will go and ask if you wish. :p

Edit:
St Leonards is the number one place to buy at the moment, but is the most expensive.
Pennsylvania / Pinhoe / Clyst Heath / Heavitree / Alphington are all nice places to live.
Wonford / Beacon Heath / Whipton are ok, but there are certain ares to avoid.

i wouldn't head for the Burnt house lane area :p

But really, most people will agree with me, the main city centre is very student orientated and very busy in the height of the season!

Just found this by looking on google

EDIT: dont think Carlisle road is too bad, my auntie and uncle live there for quite a few years and they havent had any problems.. Near to the big chimney :p

Try the Northern Rock Pheebs. They offer really good mortgage deals.

I thought they made clothes? ;)

Been looking at St Leonards actually - one of the only areas I really know. Though I wouldnt say it was the most expensive

By the way - know of any local morgage brokers? Phog - do you work for Fulfords then?

No, my mum works one day a week there and her husband manages the main office. :p She seemed happy to answer any questions. So fire away, she even offered to send out details of price range etc.

Wooohooo! Well if they're able to send us any details of 2 - 3 bed houses in decent areas upto £180k (or any of those that could possibly be offered on), which need renovation/TLC then we would be very happy indeedy! :D

If we come across any properties we think we might like, we would love to ask your Ma or Ma's hubby their opinion of location and price if they wouldn't mind?!

Would it be dandy if I throw you on my MSM Phog?!

Thanks for all responses! We're looking forward to popping down and scouting around these areas! :)

Me and the lady are in the process of buying in Oxford and I went to university in Exeter so you asked me at a good time.

The FSA has an extensive list of mortgages and advice on the different kinds available. They're all a bit of a muchness and we ended up with Barclays.

Interest rates are quite low at the moment, so a longish fixed rate seems sensible.

The studenty areas are along Prince of Wales Road, Danes Road (by the prison) and Mount Pleasant. It's almost all victorian terracing.

There are some newish flats down by the water in the centre. I'd guess they sell quickly and for a bit extra than somewhere similar in the city.

If you're thinking about going just outside the city I think Topsham is a fantastic little village.

i've lived in exeter for about 7 years on and off...feel free to add the email in my trust to your msn if you want to ask anything.

night life is, in my opinion, bloody awful club-wise, but there are some good pubs about.

i live in st thomas, and the whole area between cowick street and alphington road is pretty good- quiet area. my house backs onto the playing fields (cowick barton playing fields), so theres a nice view and plenty of space for dog walking, losing your kids etc...

we should have an exeter meet, cos it seems theres quite a few OcUKers in the area...

Soon to be two more :)
We've seen a few in that area actually and they interested us. Coswick Lane Coswick Hill, Wellington Road...

I'm moving to Exeter this summer as I'm absolutely sick of Plymouth! I reckon it's worth the commute (hope I'm right).

Pheebs, if you like to PARTAY then move into Victoria Street ;)
