Had an old Seagate 120gb in an external IcyBox style enclosure (of the "Safecom" brand), but my dad was short of HD space, so I figured I'd give him that and get myself a bigger drive.

My question is the thread title, do I buy a ~250gb IDE (older technology?) drive to put in the external or just get myself a nice quiet 250gb MyBook?

I suspect the MyBook, and that's my inclination at the moment, but opinions would be appreciated :)

Personally I'd just put a new disk in your existing caddy, with the MyBook your paying for both the disk and the housing when you have a perfectly good caddy that can be reused. I would, however, check first that your caddy can take disks bigger than 132Gb, there are some older ones out there which do not support 48bit LBA and hence are limited to 132Gb.

Change of thinking, might just buy a new caddy and new SATA hard drive to go with it. Theory is that this could then go into my computer at a later date...

So, which one should I be looking at? Guessing the Enermax for £31 or the IcyBox for £35?

I'm pondering the IcyBox myself at the moment. It has both USB2 and SATA interfaces back to the PC but if you don't have SATA capability on the PC at the moment then this might not be useful to you. There's nothing wrong with the Enermax though but I prefer the look of the IcyBox.

Either via an eSATA connection on the motherboard or I think the IcyBox comes with a blanking plate connector which connects to an internal SATA port and provides an external port. I'm not sure whether this is proper eSATA or a proprietary connector. In both cases the power comes from an external PSU which is supplied with the caddy.
