Im in my third year of a 3 (4 for hons) year computing course.
Got my results today for semester A. I always thought that the final classification was based on the average of all my third year modules but one of my mates told me today that its a bit different. I looked up my module handbook but it only explains what honors classifications are.
Does anybody know how normal degrees are worked out? (i assume its standard between universities/courses?)

Other than the final percentage being taken to a classification (i.e. 1st 70%, 2.1 60%, 2.2 50% etc), it can be worked out however they like.

My first year didn't count, and the weightings of the averages of second and third year were different.

AFAIK non honour degrees are awarded below the "third" classification.

1:1
2:1
2:2
Third
Pass

or something..

Well, every university is different however most if not all award points for each grade, the sum of these points then dictates your final grade. In my case these points are usually taken from all 8 modules of your 3rd year and the best 4 of your second year.

I did a Computer Science BSc

BSc was weighted as so:

1st year: 0% - Just had to pass
2nd year: 25% (Pretty much equally divided between modules)
3rd year: 75% (Of which most came from the Dissertation)

And then 1st was 70% or above
2:1 was 60% or something

Not sure below that...

But it's basically entirely course/uni dependent. Ask a teacher!

At Northumbria it's either (whichever is highest):
a) 100% 3rd year
b) 40/60 split on 2nd/3rd year

As for honours, I think to get it you have to not fail more than 2-3 modules.

My 4yr combined masters is

Yr1 = 0%
Yr2 = 20%
Yr3 = 40%
Yr4 = 40%

And to get an honours I've been told that you can't fail a module.

aside from variations between individual universities the scottish degree system is really rather different from the english. You need to find out for your university specifically not generally, because there is no general rule

It is, not least because it is over four years normally (with the possibility of straight entry into second year if you've got sufficient Advance Highers/A Level results). At Abertay for instance no year counted towards your Honours degree apart from the fourth, which was nice. ;)

Why are you all doing 3 year degrees? Isn't that a bit short? All the people I know have done either a 4 year Bachelors(Hons) or a 5 year Masters.... Oh and a mate who left after 3rd year with just the Bachelors (no honours).

Anyway mine was worked out as:

10% for 2nd year
25% for 3rd Year
65% for 4th Year

My 3 year BSc Biology degree is:

1st year: 0% (Just pass @ 40%+ on all modules)

then either:

If my year 2 marks are higher than 3rd year:

2nd year: 40%
3rd year: 60&

OR, if year 3 marks are consistantly higher than 2nd year:

2nd year: 0%
3rd year: 100%

my degrees marked 25% from last year 75% this year. my first year didnt coat

OR

if my mark works out better just from this year they will use that
