Explaining parts to un-educated people

If my GF is 'Technologically impaired' then I must be a 'Literary Dunce' as she can read anything from Shakespeare to Tolstoy to Harry Potter easily and understand every sentence, as well as follow the story line. I get stuck at 'Chapter One'!

Definitely not a dumb person........but still can't put more paper in the printer when it runs out.

so the 'Technologically impaired' is a better word to use since your not calling the person dumb your simply pointing out that they have trouble undertanding tech stuff :D

oh, i just rembered another one.

Trying to explain somthing to someone who thinks they know a lot about computers, when realy they just blurt out words they heard on the tv.

yes explaining why a hard drive wich stores your data and ram wich handles it are not both just memory is quite fun sometimes.

my other one is how because of great marketing people can look at any pc or mac and say "so what pentium is in that then?"

My G/F has grown to love my geeky side though i think this is because most of her famiely own PC's though she doesnt like when i let it out full swing with waves of Star Trek and geeky conversations with people wearing glasses and center partings who talk about nothing but gigabits and ram, hard drives and pixels.
I must admit i havnt failed to notice how the graphics card seems to be the celeb of the pc hardware world the missus knows what it is, somehow thinks she has good knowledge on a pc because she knows what it is and also knows that if it looks impressive and fancy it cost a lot of money

Geekyness just isn't cool at all.

On the other hand if you can explain words well to people especially in the IT world it makes perfect sence to everyone you speak too.

If someone asks me to fix something I just fix it and ask them not to ask questions unless they really need to know otherwise people who try to explain things just makes themselves out to be a big pratt or a geek on the other hand and that just ain't good.

It is funny when people ask 'what does this do, why do you need this, whats that do'.

now i dont consider myself an expert, but ive built my last couple of rigs by myself and i have a fair knowledge of how its done, and how a system works, besides a forum such as this is a great place to seek advice should you need it

When I mentioned the word processor, I got told to shut up :(
...
I was talking to other "geeks".

Thats how hard it is for me :p

I just love it when people call their base unit a hard drive. Anyone else get that said to them?

Tower, Box, CPU, Server, Mainframe, Hard Drive and I've even had someone call it "The noisy thing". :D

I work in tech support ;) You've got to laugh...otherwise you'd pull your hair out...

My Dad's the worst for it when it comes to PCs. He thinks he knows all about how they work etc and if something goes wrong he always "knows" how to fix it. I always end up having to fix it myself while sitting there listening to him talk about things he has no idea about =|

Still, he's my Dad!

That I hate, I have a work collegue and he works in a different department (Not IT related) and he trys to tell me how to do my job.

On the other hand I built his home pc for him and he gets endless problems to faults of his. I tell him not to mess about but he still does so one day I decided to say 'no' I'm not helping you. You broke it you fix it. Needless to say he did shut up after that day. That's one grudge I hate againts some people.

the worst is people who dont know the difference between 'memory' and 'hard-drive space' im normally 'forced' to call hdd space 'memory' so that people will understand me :(

how much memory do you have??? 160 GB.... What!!!???.. oooh no i said MEMORY!!!
how much hardrive space do your have??? 2 GB... wow your pc must be old then...? no, its new, only brought it last week... *SLAP*...ouch what you do that for :D

My GF tells me that she loves my geekyness.... Im not so sure, I just think she likes my free, on demand PC repair service.

The fact with this is I had to convince my sisters to cough up some cash for it. PEople need to know what there paying for...

My sister takes my PC knowledge for granted, always on the phone asking me what she has to do, pity there's no other half that my geekyness...:(

you think that's bad, my brother invited me other to stay with him at uni for a week, turns out he wanted me to build him a new pc!

My mate's dad asked me why his computer wouldn't do 1680X1050. IT was an Integrated VIA S3 thing. And he was all like "I think it's because it's INTEGRAL!"
I decided to try updating his drivers, which then asked for service pack one installed....
"Why don't you have Service Pack 1?"
"It gave me problems!"
"And your PC is wide open to Viruses and all sorts of badware"
"No, I have a Virus Scanner"
"Do you run it?"
"I don't need to, it's a good one!"
"Which one?"
"Norton Firewall 2003!"
*runs AVG Free, which finds 3000 pieces of virus stuff*
"I think it's wrong, Norton never told me there was a Virus"
"What do you download?"
"Nothing that would give me a virus, only some movies, music and stuff."
...
...
...
"A firewall isn't a virus scanner."
"What?"

Every time I see a TFT set to a non native resolution because the user wants BIGGER WORDS AND MORE SPACE I cry a little inside an a Kitten Dies. Worst was in a GP practice the other day. 24" Almost new Samsung Monitor that must have cost £300ish, being run at 1024x768! ITS NOT EVEN A WIDESCREEN RESOLUTION!

And yes, Memory, Ram, Storage, Drive Space, Hard Drive etc seem to be interchangeable words for the non literate. Does my head in!

LOL. I cant stand that either. I actually change the res. I go round friends houses and to my parents and if I spot one I just change it. Its like obsessive compulsive disorder or something, I just cant leave it
