Explanation of memory timings ?

Confused by the two different memory timings shown by CPU-Z

Please explain. Ta.

If I try and set it to what it says on the side of the memory sticks 4-4-3-9 it crashes.

So I have set it as it says in the right view. 4-4-4-12

Edit to add - voltage manually set at 2.2v

The one on the left is the nominal settings the RAM should be at - read from the SPD table. The one on the right is what is actually running at. The one on the left will never change, the one on the right will reflect your current settings.

As to why it won't run at "correct" settings? Most probably one of the other many setting you can't see easily, or else the voltage is wrong.

Mine also differs depending on where you look at it ...just thought I'd toss that into the mix.

I set it in the bios and trust that! :p

(wether that's misplaced or not I don't know :D)
 
What were the advertised timings for that ram? Does it say 4-4-3-9 on the box, or on the Corsair website?

My GEIL was sold as PC6400 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v, but according to CPU-Z, the SPD for 400Mhz is 5-5-5-15.

If your ram was sold as PC6400 4-4-3-9 @ 2.2v, then it should run at 400Mhz with those timings.

Just looked back at my posts from the weekend..... now did I slip up on the keyboard or did I try and run 4-4-3-9 instead of 3-4-3-9 as advertised...

You might have tried 4-4-3-9, since that's what CPU-Z displays as the SPD timings.

Try 3-4-3-9 and see if that works.
