Confused by the two different memory timings shown by CPU-Z

Please explain. Ta.

If I try and set it to what it says on the side of the memory sticks 4-4-3-9 it crashes.

So I have set it as it says in the right view. 4-4-4-12

Edit to add - voltage manually set at 2.2v

The one on the left is the nominal settings the RAM should be at - read from the SPD table. The one on the right is what is actually running at. The one on the left will never change, the one on the right will reflect your current settings.

As to why it won't run at "correct" settings? Most probably one of the other many setting you can't see easily, or else the voltage is wrong.

Mine also differs depending on where you look at it ...just thought I'd toss that into the mix.

I set it in the bios and trust that! :p

(wether that's misplaced or not I don't know :D)

What were the advertised timings for that ram? Does it say 4-4-3-9 on the box, or on the Corsair website?

My GEIL was sold as PC6400 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v, but according to CPU-Z, the SPD for 400Mhz is 5-5-5-15.

If your ram was sold as PC6400 4-4-3-9 @ 2.2v, then it should run at 400Mhz with those timings.

From The corsair website...

Facts about the TWIN2X2048-6400C3
The TWIN2X2048-6400C3 with EPP delivers unparalleled memory performance at 800MHz and supports the industry s lowest latencies of 3-4-3-9 in this speed grade. Using an extensive RAM screening process developed by Corsair, the new TWIN2X2048-6400C3 offers superior performance and rock solid stability at 800MHz at CL3. Optimized for the latest generation of processors and memory controllers, TWIN2X2048-6400C3 is a flexible memory solution that delivers outstanding performance at both low latency and high frequency. Designed with the ultra-enthusiasts in mind, the TWIN2X2048-6400C3 offers ample overclocking headroom, making it the ideal solution for anyone looking to build the most powerful DDR2 based systems.

From OC...

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C3 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-110-CS)
The Twin2X2048-6400C3 is a 2048 MByte matched pair of DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs. This part delivers outstanding performance in the latest generation of dual-channel DDR2-based motherboards. It has been tested extensively in multiple DDR2 motherboards to ensure compatibility and performance at its rated speed. This memory has been verified to operate at 800MHz at the low latencies of 3-4-3-9. The Twin2X2048-6400C3 comes with Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP), the open standard for performance module SPD’s jointly developed by Corsair and NVIDIA. EPP SPD’s on Corsair modules allow users to automatically configure EPP enabled motherboards with aggressive memory performance settings, for maximum memory and system performance.

Also crashes when I try the "auto aggressive" settings

Just looked back at my posts from the weekend..... now did I slip up on the keyboard or did I try and run 4-4-3-9 instead of 3-4-3-9 as advertised...

----* this is getting confusing

You might have tried 4-4-3-9, since that's what CPU-Z displays as the SPD timings.

Try 3-4-3-9 and see if that works.
