what drives spin at 27k? 10k is uncommon, my old freecom writer read cd's at 52 speed and that was 10k rpm. Sounded like a banshee lol

Yeah, I swear they made those C&C disks on the cheapest CD's, either that or it was the high usage that caused the cracks.

Mythbusters stated that they had found a few cases worldwide in their research.

Just they never got one to fail at 52x.

They disproved it would be deadly/break through the drive, not that it couldn't happen.

Many years ago my old boss had loads of gold coated CDs that the servers used to store info on. You could flick those and they would shatter into pieces.
Remember the OPs problem years ago when 52x drives first came out. loads of people complained about it happening.
Oh and OP that case is cool

i had one. What were they called? I missed mine when i flogged it on

Happened tp my Battlefirld 1942 disc and a crack is developing on my RA2 disc.

It is to do with the CD/DVD rather than the player. Both crappy EA discs!

It is deffinetly a issue with atleast some of them, I am suprised there hasn't been a bigeer deal made, it killed my DVD drive and could have taken an eye out.

I've had similar happen to me before. There was nothing visual wrong with the drive after the loud bang (Eg, no damage to the bezel) but after taking the drive apart there were lots of shards of CD. The CD was an incredibly old magazine freebie so I did wonder if it was of poorer quality at the time (Or if, for example, some unusual pressure had been applied to it during transit, being only in a paper slip case and all...).

The drive worked perfectly after removing all the shards though

Getting 27k RPM out of a drive will be rare and momentary - it will only happen on the innermost tracks of the disc and any read errors whatsoever will slow the disc down.

Still doesn't mean it can't happen of course - particularly if the disc is unbalanced or cracked.

Not happened to me yet - thank the lord and touch wood.

I lost an RA2 disc to this. It exploded in the drive and I spent about 2 hours fishing out shards of disc. Luckily the drive still worked though.
