I've got a 16tb external HDD that is running my media. I've had to move it's location behind the TV but it is so noisy! Anyone recommend some solutions to try and sound proof this device? It will be a 3.5inch mechanical HDD currently in an external caddy (seagate) @ 7200rpm.

What's making the noise, whirring or clicking? Silicon isolation pads help with the clicking and whirring being transmitted to the case.

I wouldn't mind 8tb+ ssd for nas and mass storage for silence...but not spending £1000's

A lot of whirring really. I'm going to make sure low power settings are in place and set it for low audio profile but even just pulling a move from the HDD is pretty loud. Finding lots of devices from 2009/2010 external caddys with sound proofing but it's like they don't exist anymore. :|

They generally don't exist, as these days most people use a NAS (Synology/QNAP or similar) rather than directly attaching a USB hard drive, and put it somewhere else so the noise isn't an issue.

7200 rpm drives are louder thnan 5400 drives. Some makes are quieter than others I've had Toshiba and they were prettty good in low amount of whirring and clicking (5400)

If you don't need that much storage another option is 2.5" I use one and you can't hear that

I find the WD Elements range of external drives to be pretty quiet as the HDDs are mounted in rubber blocks. They're also easy to shuck for use in a NAS.
