External drive not showing until turned on and off a few times?

Ok kinda fit it all into the title really. I have an external drive (500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 in an Sweex external enclosure) that when I turn it on it won't show up in windows. It's turning on and spinning up. Have to turn it off and back on a few times before it'll show up. Just took 5 times a few minutes ago. Any idea how to fix it? :confused:
 
USB or eSATA?

It could be that the enclosure's either on the way out or just a bit naff. I had something very similar a while back, there was nothing wrong with the drive but the caddy was only recognised occasionally.
 
USB. Only a couple of months old, probably just a bit naff :(

It also doesnt turn the drive off when the pc is shut down,so if I forget to switch it off it just keeps spinning all through the night :mad:

Any suggestions for a decent one? Not too expensive as I need three :o
 
Anyone know of a decent enclosure that will power down when the PC is shut down?
Or that will power down when the computer is in Sleep?
