External Hard Disk drive with Encryption

I'm looking to buy a portable external HDD with encryption. Just after some suggestions.

HDD are still very expensive and I'm not sure when these prices are going to start coming down. i need between 500gb and a 1tb. This will only be used for storing pictures

Could you not just Truecrypt the whole drive?

That's a much cheaper option

There is another option of just encrypting the data you require to be encrypted via containers

I use this on ALL my USB Memory sticks and it's never failed me.

However encrypting a whole hard drive would worry me as if the drive corrupted you'd basically have zero chance of recovering any files unless you backup of course
