Hi,

wondered if anybody here could advise :)

usb external hard drives are there any limitations to the size they can handle?
the reason i ask is i have 2 500gig hard drives in sumvision usb 2.0 external cases they are both cooled.
they are very tempremental when starting up
both hard drives are in 100% condition scaned ect no errors what-so-error
both 500 gig drives are picked up and load fine when they are connected via cable to computer, but when they are in external case and connected via usb
i get the normal ding dong of new usb device but nothing else 5-10 minutes later i can hear the drive clicking as in click click-------click click this goes on for a few seconds then nothing then same happens again then nothing eventualy the window opens scanning the files on the external drive
and the external drive then works fine all the time its connected.
having just built a new system which is mostly sata it would come in handy if i could find something that works 100% all of the time on these 500 gig drives :)
so my question is
are usb external cases limited to drive sizes? or is there a certain make of external box thats better on the bigger size hard drives than other makes
any thoghts or comments greatly received :)

The cases shouldn't have any capacity limits as all they do is translate the signals between SATA/PATA/whatever and USB. It may well be the Indexing Service having its way with the drive before you're allowed access. Make sure it's turned off then see how quickly a drive is recognised.

could you advise how to turn this off under vista please?
cheers :)

Either PC wide in the Services part of Control Panel (it's listed as Windows Search Service) or on an individual drive basis from the properties page of the drive in my computer.

thanks for your help :), cant see windows search service in the control panel at all :( one thing i didnt mention in my initial message is that sometimes the drives do not appear at all, but you can still hear the hard drives clicking.
and of course if this happens i cant change the index servicing for the drive, as the drive does not appear. as i have already said if the drive does show the drive is quickly scanned for files and i am asked what i wish to do ie view files ect, there just does not seem to be any pattern to it .
if i turn the indexing serivce is turned off per drive under the properties of the drive would this not dissapear when i disconnect the drive?
so if at a later date i connect the drive again the drive would need to have the indexing service turned off? but if i can see the drive to turn this option off then i wouldnt need to as i can use the drive as it has been seen by the system. thinking about it the only thing i havent tried is changing the usb cable to external hard drive, will try that next
