External Harddisk recognised as 'Local Disk' Help

I've got an external 500GB Maxtor HD that I have been using to transfer large amounts of files between my two home computers. For some reason however the hard drive is now recognised as 'Local Disk' instead of an External Harddrive and is completely lagging up the computer when it is plugged in via USB. I cannot access the Hard drive either and it just freezes Windows explorer when I try to.

I did slip off my tower earlier onto a carpeted floor, but its less than a couple of feet high surely it couldn't have been solely because of that.

I did get a windows popup asking if I wanted to format the external as well to which I said no as I didn't want to delete the files on it.

Anyone got any idea how to fix this please?

I'm reluctant to try send it back under warranty due to it having sensitive and personal information on it.

Thanks,

beezay

Its not a "Maxtor Basics" by any chance is it?

They are complete poo (I'd like to use the expletive but I think thats not allowed on this particular forum).

I had exactly the same problem when I borrowed a friends one for some backup, I couldn't get it to work full stop, I had minor success by placing it in a different USB port but even then it just took longer to "hang" on a transfer.

take it out of the external caddy and plug it in internally

most external drives have really shoddy cases
