Guys,

whats the best way to go about purchasing an external hardrive, buy an internal one + caddie, or buy an external 3.5 one. Im looking for a fast and reliable backup solution. I have a budget of up to £100, so any recommendations welcome.

I'm considering exactly the same at the moment.

Initially I was going for a cheap 1.5TB external job (under £100 everywhere).

After some thought I decided I really wanted:

  • Smaller, sleeker one that easier to carry around if required.
  • Self powered via USB so no additional power cables (the 2.5" laptop jobbies)
  • esata connection as well as USB2 (6x faster in real world) as my desktop has an esata port on top.

I thought I had made my mind up, however at the moment I also fancy a SSD for desktop &/or my netbook...

So now the new plan is to pick up a cheap HDD caddy with USB2 & ESATA for 2.5" HDD (about £15) and stick my 160Gb HDD from the netbook in it. I'll then pick up an Intel X25-V 40Gb SSD for the netbook & trial it before getting a bigger one for the desktop in another Xmonths time! :D

Comes in just over £100 & I get a more responsive netbook & an external backup drive.

Obviously not for everyone as my new external HDD will be relatively small in modern backup terms (160Gb) but still plenty for what I need! (TB would have been overkill!!!)
