external harddrives without own software

Im looking to buy a new ext. hard drive soon but as the title suggests I want to avoid one with their own software.

I bought a seagate ceedo for my girlfriend a couple of years back and was a little annoyed to find that it uses a windows-style start menu to access files that sits on your desktop, looking ugly, uncustomizable and in the way.

So can anybody name some of the companies I should avoid and the companies
I should look to. Im wanting an extHD that basically acts the same way as a memory stick or intHD, i.e. a folder that I just access via My Computer.

Thanks

Build your own with a caddy and a hdd of your choice. You could also add esata into the mix then... if you have a esata port that is!

I bought an icy box 2.5" with esata and a WD blue 500GB. Was so easy to assemble, took 2mins.

A better but slightly more expensive possibly is to use ethernet 1Gb/s or 100Mb/s and connect via your router or a NIC you can buy a caddy to suit one or more sata or IDE drives and this can be accessed from anywhere on your network. It looks just like a drive on your computer.

i'd vote for the wd mybook, although they're thick and heavy, they are a good drive.

a bus powered alternative (no power supply required) is the wd passport.
