External HDD to go with Macbook

I'm on the verge of purchasing a Macbook and rather than pay the exorbitant price to upgrade the HDD size on ordering, I think I'm going to save my cash and buy a nice chunky external HDD storage solution of some kind.

The Macbook has a 60gb hard disk which will suffice for my music & photos, however I'd like to have a little something extra (at least 200gb) for storing movie files.

What kind of storage solution is going to be my best bet here?

I've got a Lacie External 250GB with a Seagate drive inside and it's great for my desktop (it requires a mains power connection as well as the USB cable).

I'd be tempted to go for a network attached storage drive connected to your hub/router. You could then access all the data wirelessly with your Macbook. :)

Problem with wifi is it's slow not ideal for big movie files.

Slower than wired but by no means slow if it's 802.11g. Dunno what kind of video we're talking about, though, so you could well be right.

external firewire hdd would be best

Seagate Pushbutton Backup 200GB External Firewire/USB 2.0 8MB Cache Hard Drive (HD-034-SE) £73.50 (£86.36 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Apple's implementation of USB is pretty lame, but this drive has both Firewire and USB

so whatever you choose, its pretty good, plus its a Seagate drive

Its not so much with streaming but transferring files could take a long time compared to usb 2.0.

Sorry, I meant to say something around £100 at the most. I don't care what it looks like as long as it can be easily stowed on the desktop :)

The firewire one above sounds good, is it Firewire 800 compatible?

firewire 800 lacie bigdisk is what i have, its 500gb, 7200. i store samples and audio on it mostly and so far its been 100%

one of my best music/computer purchases :)

I've had my My Book Pro 250Gb for over a week (OcUK didn't have it in when I bought it, now they have it for a tenner less than I paid. D'OH!), FireWire 800 is fantastic :) Even over FW400 it's still fast as hell, though FW800 runs faster than my internal SATA drive :D

Only the 17" MacBook Pro has FW800, so you might as well just go for the My Book Premium. The 250Gb comes in at just under £100 delivered. Bargain.

Only an extra tenner for 320GB too. Thanks for the advice, think I'll go for this :)

Edit: Ah, the USB-only version is an extra tenner, it's another £30 or so for the firewire version.
